On3 Consensus: Teams with highest average grade per commit

The On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings are based on average grade per commit. It compiles the highest-rated commits for each team up to a total based on a rolling average of current total commitments among Power 5 schools. For teams tracking below that average number of commits, there are slight penalties to formulate the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings.

Below, we eliminate those penalties and sort which teams have the highest grade per commit according to the On3 Consensus.

1. Alabama (92.59)

Top Commit: Florence (Ala.) cornerback Jahlil Hurley, No. 24 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Alabama has been on a surge lately, landing commitments from four-star running back Justice Haynes, four-star quarterback Dylan Lonergan and four-star offensive lineman Ryqueze McElderry. The Crimson Tide’s class is strong all around with two defensive back five-stars in Hurley and safety Tony Mitchell, as well as another top signal-caller in four-star quarterback Eli Holstein. As a result of these wins, Nick Saban has the No. 1 class in the SEC.

2. Ohio State (92.02)

Top Commit: Miami Gardens (Fla.) American Heritage wide receiver Brandon Inniss, No. 16 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Ohio State holds the top spot thanks to its stellar summer on the recruiting trail. The Buckeyes have eight commitments in the top 10 of their position group including three of the nation’s top receivers in Tate, Brandon Inniss and Noah Rogers. Ohio State has also landed multiple top-200 defensive prospects such as four-star defensive lineman Jason Moore and Waxahachie (Texas) four-star cornerback Calvin Simpson-Hunt.

3. Notre Dame (91.82)

Top Commit: Tampa (Fla.) Berkeley Prep EDGE Keon Keeley, No. 12 in On3 Consensus
Summary: The Fighting Irish have held the No. 1 class in the country multiple times thanks to recent pledges from four-star prospects including wide receivers Jaden Greathouse and Rico Flores Jr., cornerback Christian Gray and offensive tackle Charles Jagusah. Even though Notre Dame is currently No. 2, its class is strong with six top-100 recruits including Keeley, a five-star and the top EDGE prospect in the country.

4. Georgia (91.23)

Top Commit: Phenix City (Ala.) Central cornerback A.J. Harris, No. 34 in On3 Consensus
Summary: The defending national champions aren’t far behind their conference rival in the rankings thanks to commitments from Harris and four-star linebacker Troy Bowles. Despite not having any five stars, Georgia is still recruiting top talent like four-star cornerback Daniel Harris and four-star linebacker Raylen Wilson, a former Michigan commit.

5. Clemson (91.08)
2 five-stars | 14 four-stars | 1 three-stars | 17 total recruits
Top Commit: Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson defensive lineman Peter Woods, No. 29 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Landing Woods over suitors including Alabama was a massive win for Clemson, who is coming off its first ACC Championship-less season since 2014. Dabo Swinney continues to recruit the quarterback position well by earning a pledge from five-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina a year after landing five-star Cade Klubnik. Other top players in the Tigers’ class include four-star defensive lineman Vic Burley and four-star offensive lineman Harris Sewell.

6. USC (91.07)

Top Commit: Los Alamitos (Calif.) quarterback Malachi Nelson, No. 3 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Lincoln Riley found his successor to Caleb Williams when Nelson de-committed from Oklahoma to stay home and play for the Trojans. USC’s passing attack will likely flourish under Nelson, five-star wide receiver Zachariah Branch and four-star wideout Makai Lemon. However, the Trojans are currently searching for their first commitment since June 22.

7. Miami (90.98)

Summary: What Mario Cristobal is doing on the recruiting trail is setting up a promising foundation for the Hurricanes. They have landed four top-100 prospects in Mauigoa, four-star EDGE Jayden Wayne, four-star quarterback Jaden Rashada and four-star tight end Riley Williams. Miami is also making inroads in its home state, landing six commitments from Florida including four-star wide receiver Nathaniel Joseph and four-star linebacker Raul Aguirre.

8. Auburn (90.81)

Top Commit: Phenix City (Ala.) wide receiver Karmello English, No. 140 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Even though the Tigers only have four commitments, three of them are in the top 200. Auburn’s two highest-ranked pledges, English and Montgomery (Ala.) Montgomery Catholic Preparatory four-star running back Jeremiah Cobb, both committed this month. The Tigers’ next-highest ranked prospect is Fairburn (Ga.) Langston Hughes four-star linebacker Terrance Love, who is No. 196 in the On3 Consensus. Auburn’s group is rounded out by Auburn (Ala.) three-star interior offensive lineman Bradyn Joiner.

9. Oregon (90.65)
1 five-stars | 7 four-stars | 3 three-stars | 11 total recruits
Top Commit: Detroit Martin Luther King quarterback Dante Moore, No. 10 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Moore was a massive pickup for Dan Lanning in his first offseason with the Ducks. Oregon has also recruited offensive assets for Moore such as four-star wide receiver Jurrion Dickey. Lanning is also following Mario Cristobal’s blueprint and recruiting the West well. Four of the Ducks’ top six commitments are from California, Washington, Arizona and Nevada. This group is led by four-star cornerback Caleb Presley.

10. LSU (90.52)

Top Commit: Miami Gulliver Prep wide receiver Jalen Brown, No. 36 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Brian Kelly has turned LSU into a destination for some of the country’s best players. He landed Brown and a local running back in four-star Kaleb Jackson. Many of LSU’s four-star prospects have committed in July including EDGE Jaxon Howard EDGE Dashawn Womack and defensive lineman Darron Reed. Classes like this will help Kelly compete against Nick Saban and Kirby Smart.

11. Texas (90.51)
2 five-stars | 10 four-stars | 6 three-stars | 18 total recruits
Top Commit: New Orleans Isidore Newman quarterback Arch Manning, No. 1 in On3 Consensus
Summary: The Longhorns haven’t earned a pledge since July 3, but their class is in good position thanks to Manning. After he announced Texas as his college destination, 10 players committed after him. In addition to Manning, the Longhorns have top-50 prospects in four-star safety Derek Williams and four-star wide receiver Johntay Cook II.

12. Penn State (90.41)

Top Commit: Ashburn (Va.) Broad Run interior offensive lineman Alex Birchmeier, No. 28 in On3 Consensus
Summary: James Franklin has had a successful summer on the recruiting trail. Penn State has earned commitments from in-state recruits like four-star running back London Montgomery, as well as those outside the Nittany Lions’ regional footprint including four-star cornerback Elliot Washington, a former Alabama commit from Florida. It may not challenge Ohio State for the Big Ten’s top recruiting class, but Penn State continues to make progress that may pay off in State College in a few years.

13. Ole Miss (90.12)

Top Commit: Raleigh (Miss.) linebacker Suntarine Perkins, No. 72 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Despite having a small class, the Rebels have a strong leader of the group in Perkins, who is the No. 4 linebacker in the On3 Consensus. Every one of Ole Miss’ commitments are top-500 prospects. Three of them are top-400 including Chattanooga (Tenn.) four-star interior offensive lineman Brycen Sanders, Cordele (Ga.) Crisp County four-star athlete Ahmad Brown and Nashville (Tenn.) Montgomery Bell Academy four-star quarterback Marcel Reed. The Rebels’ class also includes Dallas Parish Episcopal School three-star safety Daniel Demery.

14. Louisville (90.04)

Top Commit: El Campo (Texas) running back Rueben Owens, No. 32 in On3 Consensus
Summary: The Cardinals landed their latest high-profile prospect when four-star interior offensive lineman Madden Sanker chose Louisville over multiple blue-blood programs this month. The class is promising offensively with one of the nation’s top running backs in Owens, a five-star, and a dynamic pass catcher in top-100 wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. Four-star quarterback Pierce Clarkson has also done a nice job helping draw top players to look into the Cardinals.

15. Oklahoma (89.92)

Top Commit: Denton (Texas) Guyer quarterback Jackson Arnold, No. 19 in On3 Consensus
Summary: The Sooners have had a strong July. Brent Venables and his staff have landed four-star EDGE Adepoju Adebawore, four-star wide receiver Jaquaize Pettaway and four-star offensive tackle Cayden Green among seven recruits. Arnold may also be the Sooners’ quarterback of the future. As Oklahoma prepares to enter the SEC by 2025, Venables has provided promise on the recruiting trail.

16. Florida (89.78)

Top Commit: Tampa (Fla.) Gaither wide receiver Eugene Wilson III, No. 123 in On3 Consensus
Summary: After a slow start on the recruiting trail, Billy Napier is building a solid class in his first offseason in Gainesville. The Gators’ group is led by in-state commitments such as Wilson III, four-star running back Treyaun Webb and three-star quarterback Marcus Stokes, a former Penn State commit. Florida also have five four-star defensive commitments. Two of them are in the top-200 including defensive lineman T.J. Searcy.

17. Florida State (89.58)

Top Commit: Highland Home (Ala.) EDGE Keldric Faulk, No. 69 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Landing Faulk, a four-star and top-100 recruit, was a massive win on the recruiting trail for Mike Norvell. The Seminoles also boosted their offensive line with pledges from four-star offensive tackle Lucas Simmons and four-star interior offensive lineman Roderick Kearney. Florida State also has commitments from other defensive four-stars in defensive lineman Keith Sampson Jr. and EDGE Lamont Green Jr. However, they recently lost a commitment from four-star quarterback Chris Parson.

18. Texas A&M (89.49)

Top Commit: La Grange (Tex.) cornerback Bravion Rogers, No. 49 in On3 Consensus
Summary: After reeling in the nation’s No. 1 class last year, the Aggies aren’t currently on the same trajectory as 2021. However, they have earned commitments from talented prospects including Rogers and Dallas South Oak Cliff four-star cornerback Jayvon Thomas. Other top-400 recruits in Texas A&M’s class are Spring Branch (Texas) Smithson Valley four-star interior offensive lineman Colton Thomasson and Katy (Texas) Paetow four-star linebacker Daymion Sanford. The group also includes Southlake (Texas) Carroll Senior three-star punter Tyler White.

19. Michigan State (89.30)

Top Commit: Norman (Okla.) Community Christian School EDGE Bai Jobe, No. 63 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Even though Michigan State has only one top-100 recruit and two top-200 recruits, the Spartans are benefiting from its breakthrough 2021 season. They have landed Jobe, four-star EDGE Andrew Depaepe and four-star linebacker Jordan Hall. Additionally, Michigan State has earned commitments from the recruiting hotbeds of Texas and Florida from players such as Hall and three-star quarterback Bo Edmundson.

20. Tennessee (89.23)

Top Commit: Long Beach (Calif.) Poly quarterback Nico Iamaleava, No. 4 in On3 Consensus
Summary: Four-star EDGE Chandavian Bradley was a massive pickup for Josh Heupel, who already has built a strong 2023 recruiting class for the Volunteers. Iamaleava is the star of the group and figures to be a key piece of the program when he arrives in Knoxville. The Volunteers also earned pledges from two other top-100 players in four-star EDGE Caleb Herring, the top recruit in Tennessee, and four-star tight end Ethan Davis.

21. Stanford (88.43)

Summary: David Shaw is on the road to building another impressive class in Palo Alto. It’s led by Platt and American Fork (Utah) four-star EDGE Hunter Clegg. The Cardinal’s other four-star recruits include Mission Hills (Calif.) cornerback Jshawn Frausto-Ramos, Miami Christopher Columbus High School running back Sedrick Irvin Jr. and Bainbridge (Ga.) Robert F Munroe Day School wide receiver Ahmari Borden.

22. Michigan (88.31)

Summary: Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines had a rough start to the summer that included losing a commitment from four-star linebacker Raylen Wilson. Now, Michigan finds itself in the top 25 after landing four four-star recruits this month including Etta, interior offensive lineman Amir Herring of West Bloomfield (Mich.), linebacker Semaj Bridgeman of Warminster (Penn.) and EDGE Collins Acheampong of Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) Catholic.

23. North Carolina (88.22)

Summary: In last year’s recruiting class, the Tar Heels finished No. 10 after earning commitments from five-star offensive tackle Zach Rice and four-star defensive lineman Travis Shaw. While North Carolina is off to a slower start this cycle, Mack Brown currently has commitments from Harvey, four-star EDGE Rico Walker and four-star wide receivers Christian Hamilton and Chris Culliver. All three are top 10 players in North Carolina.

24. Arkansas (88.21)

Summary: Easter leads the recruiting class for one of the SEC’s upstart programs under head coach Sam Pittman. The Razorbacks’ class includes three four-star tight ends and four-star quarterback Malachi Singleton. Pittman also has made strides on the defensive side of the ball with pledges from four-star cornerbacks Jaylon Braxton and Micah Tease.

25. UCF (88.08)

The class includes multiple four-stars including Harris, Altamonte Springs, FL Lake Brantley linebacker Michael Harris and Apopka (Fla.) EDGE Kaven Call. All six of UCF’s 2023 commits are top-900 prospects.
