Week 5 of college football was an entertaining one, seeing plenty of upsets throughout the country. Top-ranked teams took care of business as well, giving us a good balance in the sport. ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit decided to name his top-performing teams of the week, giving seven programs a shoutout.

Of the seven, five different conferences are represented. The ACC has the most, with Clemson being the top team for Herbstreit after their home win against NC State. Just below the Tigers are UCLA, who got a win against Washington in a battle of undefeated.

Trio of ACC teams get recognition from Kirk Herbstreit

Clemson has now made two statements in as many weeks, getting a crucial ACC win against NC State on Saturday night. Once again, quarterback DJ Uiagalelei played to the level everyone thought he could coming into college, having 283 total yards and three touchdowns (two rushing).

Wake Forest was the first team Clemson made a statement against, winning in Winston-Salem. Dave Clawson’s squad responded in a big way, beating Florida State on the road. While another shot at an ACC championship may be looking bleak, Saturday was a crucial win to stay in the race.

Now, a top-performing team nobody expected to be discussing on Monday is Georgia Tech. A week after letting go of Geoff Collins, a win over Pittsburgh proved to be their third of the season. The Panthers were ranked at the time as well, being the program’s second win vs. a ranked opponent since 2017.

Ole Miss gets top 10 win vs. Kentucky

Lane Kiffin is undoubtedly known for his offense and rightfully so. But it was Ole Miss’ defense coming in clutch during Saturday’s showdown in Oxford. They were able to cause two Kentucky fumbles out of the hand of quarterback Will Levis, being the difference.

Now, Ole Miss is 5-0 for the first time since 2014 when Hugh Freeze had the program on fire. A tough stretch of the schedule is still there but for now, the Rebels might have the best momentum going in the SEC.
