Travis Perry is the No. 87 player in the 2024 On3 Consensus. The 6-foot-2 point guard is coming off a much-anticipated matchup against 2023 Kentucky signee Reed Sheppard where Perry went for 45 points, going 10-16 from three, in the win.

“I try and play hard every possession,” Perry told On3. “I’ve got a high basketball IQ and stay a step ahead of the other team to give my team and me an advantage. I play a very dynamic style of basketball, I love to get out and score and make plays in transition, and I love to shoot the ball when needed, but I also love creating open looks at the rim for teammates. But I love to shoot the ball as well. When I cross half-court, I am literally considering shooting the ball, especially if my stroke feels good. I want the ball in my hands with the game on the line. I love taking the big shots.”

Perry has been playing varsity basketball at Eddyville (KY) Lyon County High since the seventh grade. Coming into this season, he scored 3,160 career points in 124 games, shooting 38.3 percent from three. On3 recently caught up with Travis Perry to talk recruitment.

Perry talks visits

“I have taken official visits to Purdue, Michigan, and Ole Miss,” Perry said.

Purdue: “Coach (Matt) Painter and his staff have been on me for a while, and I felt like it would be a great place to learn more about. When I visited, what stood out was how detailed the staff is in their planning and overall schedules. Also, Coach Painter is one of the best in the business, a very impressive coach and person. The staff pitched how I will fit in their system and how similar not only my play style but also my personality to what they value.”

Michigan: “I hadn’t talked with their staff a ton before the visit, but talking on the phone with Coach (Juwan) Howard and Coach (Phil) Martelli, I knew I wanted to visit. While on the visit, what stood out was how much they put into their players and how much they want them to succeed. I have a great relationship with both Coach Howard and Coach Martelli, and they call or text almost daily.”

Ole Miss: Coach (Kermit) Davis has been on me since the very beginning. He has shown constant interest and has stayed in contact for a long time. We’ve really built a good relationship. The visit was a great weekend with both a football and basketball game, and the atmosphere on campus is awesome. Coach David pitches how I will fit in his system and ultimately help them win.”

Perry talks recruiting

“I have talked with a few programs about potentially taking an official visit,” Perry said. “I am thinking I will try and do an official visit to Virginia in February sometime.”

Virginia: “Coach (Tony) Bennett is an amazing coach, and they pitch that I would fit in their system well. Coach Bennett and Coach (Kyle) Getter have been in contact a lot. They have gone through their way of doing things and how I could help them win.”

UCLA and LSU have been in frequent contact recently of the schools that have not offered,” Perry said.

Kentucky

“I’ve been up to some practices and Big Blue Madness and enjoyed those,” Perry said. “I like Coach (John) Calipari a lot and have had good conversations with him. I feel really comfortable with him and love how he is a player’s first coach.”

In his words

“I do not have a set timeframe of when I want to narrow down or commit,” Perry said. “I am just taking the process as it comes and trying not to rush it. I’m just enjoying it and being thankful for the position I’m in.

“The relationships I build with the coaches and staff are very important to me. Having a place where I can help them win and they can help me grow as a player and person. Lots of trust and belief between myself and the coaches as well. I want to go somewhere where I can make an impact on and off the court with great relationships.”
