On3 led the charge in naming five-star Tre Johnson the No. 1 ranked player in the 2024 class in July. In the three months since, the industry has followed as Johnson is now the No. 1 player in the rankings of all four major recruiting services.

This go-around, our decision was quick to have Johnson remain No. 1 in the updated On3 2024 150. Let’s take a look at why Johnson was the choice.

“I’m a scorer”

Tre Johnson told On3 this during Peach Jam. It is a true statement. Through his summer, playing up in age with Team Griffin on Nike’s EYBL 17u Circuit, the 6-foot-5 wing averaged close to 15 points while shooting 35 percent from three.

He has lengthy arms with a confident and efficient handle that gets him to his spots. Johnson carries a smooth shooting stroke that remains consistent, no matter his level on the floor. The footwork, the balance, and the court awareness are all there. His feel as a scorer is unique for a high school player who has yet to start his junior season.

As a sophomore, Johnson averaged 23.7 points for his 32-and-5 Dallas Lake Highlands High School team. It’s a great mix of shot creation and shot-making.

The pedigree

Johnson’s dad, Richard Johnson, Jr., signed with Baylor out of high school. In his collegiate career, between Baylor and Midwestern State, Johnson scored over 1,100 career points.

As a senior, the elder Johnson was a 6-foot-3 guard named first-team All-Lone Star Conference. He shot 41.7 percent from three over his last two college seasons and won a conference title as a senior.

Johnson’s recruitment

Tre Johnson is pushing 20 offers. The Lake Highlands junior has gone on two junior year official visits so far, one to Texas (9/17) and one to Baylor (10/1).

It should also be noted the No. 1 player in 2024 told On3 he has visited the Overtime Elite facility, and he has been in contact with the G-League.

Looking forward

There will still be multiple rankings updates for the 2024 class, but Johnson’s game has staying power. Shot creating and shot making are everything in today’s game. Players who can create scoring opportunities are incredibly valuable. People who can create and shoot are even more sought after. Johnson’s ability to create clean looks and knock down shots efficiently is what makes his game so lucrative.

Johnson’s skill set, positional size, production, and pedigree were all points discussed when making the decision to keep Johnson at No. 1.
