Conference title games loom large

There’s no surprise about the Georgia Bulldogs dominating the national title odds. They’re six-point favorites versus the defending national champions and they’re the first team to play favorite versus Alabama since 2015.

The Bulldogs defense is holding opponents to 6.9 points per game and they recorded yet another shutout this weekend versus Georgia Tech. Kirby Smart’s squad looks unstoppable.

Despite a narrow escape this weekend versus Auburn, the Alabama Crimson Tide are still No. 2 in the race for the national title, according to Vegas. Bryce Young engineered a second-half comeback and proved he has the clutch factor in the four-overtime win in the Iron Bowl. Still, if Bama loses to Georgia in the SEC title game, depending on their performance, they risk losing their shot to win it all.

Michigan made a huge statement over the weekend in their victory over Ohio State. The Wolverines’ defense held Ohio State to a season-low in points, with 27, and total yardage, with 458.

That performance was enough to vault Michigan up to No. 2 in the AP Top 25 Poll, up from No. 6 last week, while Ohio State fell to No. 7 after its College Football Playoff hopes dissipated. The Wolverines have to face a resurgent Iowa team to secure their path to the CFP.

Mike Gundy’s Oklahoma State Cowboys managed to upend the Oklahoma Sooners, the program’s first rivalry-week win since 2014. In the process, the Cowboys moved up to No. 5 in the AP Poll, and they have a compelling case for the College Football Playoff.

Everything hangs in the balance for the Cincinnati Bearcats this weekend. Luke Fickell’s squad is in a must-win situation to stay in the CFP and title odds conversation.
