Urban Meyer addresses his interest in potentially returning to coaching

Since his historically unsuccessful foray into NFL coaching, three-time national champion head coach Urban Meyer has seemingly been content in retirement. He’s got a TV gig with Fox on the Big Noon Kickoff show and can enjoy the trappings of being college coach emeritus.

But Meyer is also known for his ultra-competitive streak and it probably wouldn’t be a stunner to see him back on the sidelines. But according to the man himself, there’s not a big desire to get back to coaching any time soon.

Meyer said as much on the “All Things Covered” podcast with Patrick Peterson and Bryant McFadden.

“No desire,” Meyer said of returning to the sidelines. He then moved on to discuss the Jaguars in the year since he was fired. “Of course, I think I’d do some things differently. And I was excited to see — because they have a lot of different players than when I was there. They did a really good job in free agency this year. But, to me, and you guys know this, it almost is funny to me to say the NFL is a quarterback league. Pop Warner is a quarterback league. So is high school. It’s a quarterback sport. When you get a killer like a Trevor Lawrence or a J.T. Barrett or a Cardale Jones or a Tim Tebow, you’ve got a chance.”

Since he stepped on the football field at Clemson almost five years ago, Trevor Lawrence has not lost a football game he’s started that’s been played on a Saturday. Not there, not with the Jacksonville Jaguars — admittedly with limited opportunity in his first pro season in 2021.

But that unblemished Saturday mark ended against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC divisional round as the Jags lost, 27-20. Lawrence is now 34-1 on Saturdays.

The two losses Clemson sustained with Lawrence as the starter: A Friday loss in the College Football Playoff semifinals to Ohio State and a Monday loss to LSU in the national championship game.

It’s a pretty astonishing mark, given how hard it is to not misstep once in basically three seasons of being a college quarterback.

But playing Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs will potentially end any streak, even the unique one Lawrence held.
