The Washington Huskies‘ quarterback competition is in full swing with less than a month to go before the season opener versus Kent State on Sept. 3. Head coach Kalen DeBoer is currently attempting to split reps between his three quarterbacks – at least for the first week of fall camp.

Reports out of practice from Mike Vorel revealed that freshman Sam Huard led the squad with the majority of first-team reps on Friday. However, it was still returner Dylan Morris who took the first snaps with the ones.

“Today provided a nice window into the Sam Huard dilemma,” Vorel also reported. “UW’s redshirt freshman QB threw a bad pick to Dom Hampton where he stared down his WR … then bounced back with three long TD passes. Encouraging day on the whole.”

Although Morris and Huard split the first and second-team reps on Friday, Indiana transfer Michael Penix is still fighting for the top job as well.

Huard entered the Washington program as the No. 15 prospect in the nation, according to the On3 Consensus.

DeBoer discusses state of Washington QB competition

Diving into the biggest decision of the offseason, DeBoer broke down his top three quarterbacks.

“Michael Penix comes to us from Indiana where I coached with him for one year,” DeBoer said. “Systematically he understands what we do. That was an easy transition for him during spring ball. You see him being able to coach guys up and being a little more confident in that.

“Dylan, I have only got the 15 practices to go off of and the film,” DeBoer continued. “But he’s taken a lot of snaps in a Husky uniform. It’s cool hearing the guys that are on the team and hearing them talk about how much they see Dylan’s improvement from last year already to where we’re at now. That’s only going to continue to happen and develop.

“Then you got the up-and-comer. You got Sam Huard. Took a few snaps last year or last year. His ceiling, he’s probably the furthest away from his ceiling because he’s younger, hasn’t taken as many snaps that the other two have. Every day his growth is the one that probably will continue to be the most extreme each and every day.”
