Virginia Tech is expected to hire Maryland’s Elijah Brooks as running backs coach, sources tell On3.

Brooks, a former head coach at high school power DeMatha, has had two of his running backs drafted in the last three NFL drafts.

Under Brooks, Maryland redshirt freshman Roman Hemby was one of just four Big Ten running backs last season to rush for at least 985 yards, at least 10 TDs and an average of at least 5.25 yards per carry.

The Brooks hire will fill one of the two offensive staff openings for Virginia Tech, which is expected to move current running backs coach Stu Holt to tight ends coach and offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen from tight ends coach to a position group.

Virginia Tech had the openings from quarterbacks coach Brad Glenn leaving for the offensive coordinator position at Cincinnati and offensive line coach Joe Rudolph departing for a job at Notre Dame.

The Hokies are entering their second season with Brent Pry as their head coach after finishing last season 3-8.
