Bill O’Brien could be on his way back to the NFL. After a stop back in college as Nick Saban’s offensive coordinator, the Alabama assistant is interviewing for vacant coaching positions at the next level.

On Wednesday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed O’Brien will be interviewing with a former AFC South foe.

“The Jaguars will interview Bama OC and ex-Texans head coach Bill O’Brien tomorrow, source said,” tweeted Rapoport. “With 4 playoffs appearances in 6 seasons in HOU, O’Brien has a strong resume on the field. It fell apart when he got involved in personnel, and he has no plans for that this time.”

Of course, O’Brien made a living beating the Jaguars over his seven seasons with the Houston Texans. After being unceremoniously fired by Houston just four games into the 2020 season, O’Brien could exact revenge twice a season if he’s hired by the Jaguars.

Moreover, O’Brien was putting all of his focus into game-planning for the Georgia Bulldogs. However, his Crimson Tide came up short in their attempt to win the national championship. Now, the coach is free to explore his options.

Earlier this week, it was reported the Carolina Panthers would have interest in O’Brien for their offensive coordinator position. Additionally, the New York Giants were linked to O’Brien prior to firing coach Joe Judge. While those jobs would’ve been nice, Jacksonville is thinking about hiring O’Brien for the main job.

Bill O’Brien is going to get another shot in the NFL. Whether it’s this hiring cycle or later in the future remains to be seen, but returning to the AFC South may be the perfect fit.

More on Bill O’Brien, Jacksonville Jaguars

Bill O’Brien may be exactly what the Jaguars are looking for in their next head coach. After multiple seasons of success in Houston, his resume precedes him. Four division titles in seven seasons is nothing to scoff at.

Moreover, O’Brien could help quarterback Trevor Lawrence in his development. Ironically, O’Brien mentored an athlete Lawrence knows well — quarterback Deshaun Watson. Things worked out well for O’Brien and the former Clemson star for a period of time.

As Rapoport mentions, O’Brien won’t be looking for roster control this time. Many believe that’s the reason his tenure in Houston fell apart. Evidently, the former Texans coach is learning from his past mistakes.

Bill O’Brien will have competition for the Jaguars job. However, he may be the best option available for Jacksonville.
