Brooks Koepka might want to take a brief pause and think about his word choice before he answers a question the next time he’s at a podium. The LIV Golf star and four-time major champion went viral for all the wrong reasons at the PGA Championship Thursday.

Koepka, known as one of the faster players in golf, was asked about the pace of play at the major tournaments. He believes it’s becoming a real problem.

“There’s a lot of guys out here that take their time. I think it is a problem,” Koepka said. “I mean, technically, in the rule book it says you have 40 seconds to hit your shot — I think is what it is. If you go over, technically you’re breaking the rules, right?”

No harm in that quote, right? A pretty straight-forward answer. But it’s when he was asked how he’d fix it when things got a little R-rated. Koepka did provide a solution, but it sounds a little … yeah.

“Honestly, I’d start stroking guys,” Koepka said. “If you’re gonna take that long, you gotta get stroked.”

Hmmm … can’t imagine why social media ran with that quote, can you?

In other, more family friendly words, Koepka would like to see players receive a stroke penalty if they’re taking too long between shots. He acknowledged that, at times, things out of a player’s control can factor into the equation.

“I mean, there’s certain circumstances … the wind switches, (things) like that, it’s understandable,” he said. “But, taking awhile, I think, is unnecessary.”

All fair points, Brooks. Just think about your wording next time!

Koepka shoots 2-over in opening round of PGA Championship

Koepka traveled to Oak Hill Country Club hoping to add another major championship to his collection. He’s owns four in his career, which includes a pair of PGA Championship wins in 2018 and 2019.

The PGA Tour-turned-LIV Golf star didn’t have the best opening round. Koepka carded a 2-over-par 72 to open play on Thursday. That places him in a tie for 42nd heading into Friday’s round.

Koepka sits six shots back of the leader (and former arch nemesis) Bryson DeChambeau (-4). He carded three bogeys with just one birdie during his opening round.

Koepka enters the PGA Championship off a solid outing at The Masters. He finished in a tie for second with fellow LIV Golf talent Phil Mickelson — both shooting -8. Jon Rahm took home the green jacket, shooting -12.
