Corey Heim wins Phoenix race, NASCAR Truck Series championship in double overtime

Have you ever?! 12 wins, countless laps led, and finally, a championship. Corey Heim got it done tonight in Phoenix. It looked like everybody’s worst fears were going to come true. Heim looked like he let it slip through his fingers. Then he got his elbows up and did the damn thing.
Scott Zipadelli made a call going into the first overtime that could have been the nail in the coffin tonight. When everyone else took two tires to get track position, Heim took four. He went from P2 to almost out of the top-10.
The third time’s the charm for Corey Heim tonight. A seven-wide move into the dogleg in overtime gave Heim his track position back. Then, in the second overtime, he did what he’s done all season long – win.
Corey Heim led 100 laps tonight. No one else led more than 24 laps on the day. After such a dominant season, everyone was worried about what would happen if Heim didn’t win. That was all the talk. Kevin Harvick said it would be embarrassing for NASCAR if Heim didn’t win the Truck Series championship.
When Layne Riggs took the lead, coming off a pit stop with four fresh tires to Heim’s two, it was concerning. Taking clean air from the 11 gave Ty Majeski a boost. Now, it looked like the 98 was going to pass the 11. In that scenario, Riggs wins the Owners’ Championship for the 34 team, Majeski wins the Drivers’ Championship without a win this year, and Heim would have ended up with nothing.
It was almost a reality, too. Then, Connor Mosack had a flat and damaged his truck. He tried to get off the racing surface but his truck went back up the track. Caution. Overtime. Oh no.

Corey Heim makes seven-wide work for championship
The visuals that you get with Phoenix Raceway are second to none. The dogleg makes these late-race moments, especially at night, look so intense. It looks like a movie watching these cars and trucks dive down and then pop back up, throwing sparks all over.
Before the first overtime, Heim took four tires. Scott Zipadelli said he wasn’t going to make any other decision at that point in the race. Well…Heim restarted barely inside of the top-10. It looked like Zipadelli, who is always so good on the pit box, had made the wrong call. Until…
Coming off of the restart in overtime, Heim dove down and took the dogleg. He screamed past a truck or two and then, there it was, SEVEN WIDE! Seven trucks top to bottom of the track, and no one wrecked, either. Heim came out of the seven-wide move with second place in his hands. Caution again…
Corey Heim gathered himself once again. He lined up side-by-side with Ty Majeski. He waited for the 98 truck to take off, and then it was on. Before the field went into Turn 3, Heim had taken the lead. At that point, it was like every one of the 11 races we had seen before. Heim ran away from the field and is going home with the NASCAR Truck Series championship.
