Heartbreak would be the only way to describe Sunday’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers. For the second consecutive season, the Dallas Cowboys have seen their season end to their long-time NFC rivals, coming up short of a conference championship game once again. It’s going to sting for some time but there are no days off in the NFL.

By the time Dallas heads out to California for training camp next fall, there will be a 90-man roster in place. Less than 24 hours after the playoff loss, five players were given out Reserve/Future contracts by the organization.

“Cowboys can begin building toward a 90-man roster,” Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News tweeted. “They announced the following Reserve/Future contract signings: WR Dontario Drummond, C Brock Hoffman, C Alec Lindstrom, S Sheldrick Redwine, and S Juanyeh Thomas. More expected to come.”

Dallas did not have to go too far to find these players, with all five spending time on the practice squad this season. Redwine is the only one who has real experience in the league, playing for the Cleveland Browns during a run to the 2020 playoffs.

He even got an interception against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round. However, he has been on multiple team’s practices squads since then and wound up with the Cowboys this year.

With the Reserve/Future contract, other teams will not be allowed to talk with the players, giving Dallas the rights to them heading into the 2023 season. All will be fighting for a place on the 53-man roster, which will be announced just before Week 1 of the regular season.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy ‘safe’ after loss

The Dallas Cowboys’ 19-12 NFC Divisional Playoff loss to the San Fransisco 49ers had its fair share of mistakes and blunders for the Cowboys.

With that comes the question of what changes Dallas needs to make heading into next season, which almost always starts with the head coach. Some may think Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is in the hot seat following Sunday’s showing, but NFL insider Ian Rapoport disagrees.

“Mike McCarthy’s not in trouble, might there be some staff changes? Anything’s possible when things don’t go perfectly, I mean there’s I think 13 or so coordinator jobs open in the NFL right now,” Rapoport said. “That actually might just be offensive coordinators, there’s a lot, there’s a lot of coordinator movement this year.”

The Cowboys end the season with a top-10 scoring offense and defense, which has led to both their offensive and defensive coordinators Kellen Moore and Dan Quinn’s names circulating for head coaching jobs, which Rapoport believes is a lot more likely than McCarthy losing his job.
