Houston Texans fire their offensive coordinator, former Penn State coach
The Houston Texans have fired their offensive coordinator, Tim Kelly, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He had spent seven overall seasons with the Texans, including two seasons as the tight ends coach (2017-2018) and three years as offensive quality control coach (2014-2016). Kelly also helped Mike Devlin with the offensive line during the 2016 season.
Kelly spent the 2012-13 season at Penn State as a graduate assistant. His brother, Dennis Kelly, played college football at Purdue and is currently an offensive tackle for the Green Bay Packers.
Kelly wasn’t exactly loaded with weapons on the Houston Texans’ offense, so it might be a case of unrealistic expectations from their ownership. Remarkably, Brandin Cooks still had a very good season in 2021, with 90 catches for 1,037 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
He put up those numbers despite erratic play from the quarterback position and no other legitimate weapons in the Houston offense.
The Texans’ coaching staff did a tremendous job developing Davis Mills
Recently fired Houston Texans‘ head coach David Culley did more with Davis Mills than any other coaching staff in the league did with their rookie quarterbacks.

While he struggled mightily early, Mills improved drastically throughout the season and the Texans’ coaching staff is to be commended for that. He had over four games of throwing for over 300 passing yards.
Not only that, he saved one of his best performances for the last game of the season. Mills completed 23 of his 33 pass attempts for 301 passing yards while tossing in three touchdowns and no interceptions.
His tape coming out of Stanford showed a lot of promise and Mills demonstrated a lot of potential this season. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of future he has with the Texans.
Regardless the Houston Texans’ coaching staff did as much with very little as any other staff in the league this season. Despite their staff getting cleaned out, most football fans understand they did a great job in the 2021-2022 season.
