Jimmy Johnson reacts to Deion Sanders-Dallas Cowboys rumors: ‘I don’t see that happening’
Jimmy Johnson doesn’t see Deion Sanders becoming the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. While appearing on FS1’s The Facility on Tuesday, the former Cowboys head coach explained why he thinks Sanders will not make the jump to the NFL.
“No, I don’t think that’ll happen,” Jimmy Johnson said on the show Tuesday. “Don’t get me wrong, I love Deion, I love Prime, but his strength is bringing in talent. He’s got an outstanding coach staff [at Colorado]; that’s one reason why they’ve gotten to where they are. But I don’t see it happening there in Dallas.”
Mike McCarthy is the current head coach of the Cowboys, but the belief is he’ll be gone after the end of the 2024 season. The team has given no indication that will happen, but if the Cowboys finish the year with a losing record, a rebuild will likely happen, meaning a new head coach is on top of the list.
Sanders is in his second season as the Colorado Buffaloes head coach, and the team has an 8-3 record. This is the most wins the Buffaloes have had in a season since they finished 10-4 in 2016. Colorado got some good news on the recruiting front as Julian Lewis, the sixth-ranked QB prospect in the Class of 2025, flipped his commitment from USC to the Buffaloes. This likely means that Sanders intends to stay at Colorado for the foreseeable future.

Deion Sanders talks about having no ‘desire’ to coach in the NFL
In 2023, Sanders told Bri Amaranthus of Sports Illustrated that he does not plan to coach in the NFL anytime soon. “I don’t have any desire or ambition to coach in the NFL,” Sanders said. “I have a problem with men getting their checks and not doing their jobs. I would be too tough as a coach in the NFL because I still have those old-school attributes.”
Sanders’ head coaching approach has led to success at the college level. He started at Jackson State in 2020 and registered a 27-6 record in three seasons. His success at Jackson State led to him being named SWAC Coach of the Year twice and winning the Eddie Robinson Award in 2021.
