New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields will miss Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins due to knee soreness. Veteran Tyrod Taylor will get the start, while rookie quarterback Brady Cook will back him up.

Fields, who has played in nine games this season, has passed for 1,259 yards and seven touchdowns. He’s only thrown one interception, while rushing for 383 yards and four more scores.

Taylor will be making his fourth start for the Jets in place of Fields. The 15-year veteran has seen game action in five games this season, passing for 773 yards and five touchdowns with four interceptions. The franchise is just 1-4 in games he’s played in this year.

Cook, who has yet to enter an NFL game, will be backing up Taylor. The former Missouri Tiger went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft and quickly latched on with the Jets. Ahead of Sunday’s game, New York head coach Aaron Glenn spoke highly of Cook.

“He’s a very fiery guy,” Glenn said. “The one thing that we do quite a bit in practice is have a number of competition periods. You see exactly how he goes about his business when his time comes up to really be in that situation and compete. He looks forward to it, and he always asks when those opportunities are going to come for him to get a chance to do it. We’ve made sure to give him those reps, so he’s a very competitive guy. He’s gonna be a quarterback in this league. I can’t tell you when, but he’ll be a quarterback in this league.”

This season has certainly not gone the way the Jets envisioned when they brought Fields in on a $30 million guarantee this offseason. They were hoping they could unlock the upside that the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers never fully tapped into by bringing the quarterback to New York, but that just hasn’t come to fruition.

The Jets currently hold a top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, plus an additional first-rounder in both 2026 and 2027 thanks to the Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams trades. That draft capital likely puts them in position to move up for a quarterback, as Fields’ time in New York seems to be running out.
