Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh gave an update on quarterback Justin Herbert, who suffered an injury on Sunday. Harbaugh said that Herbert has a break in his left hand and will have surgery on Monday. The Chargers coach also said he wasn’t sure if Herbert would miss any time.

Justin Herbert suffered the injury in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Trey Lance replaced him, but Herbert returned to the game early in the second quarter. The former Oregon star completed 15-of-20 passes for 151 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the Chargers’ 31-14 victory.

Chargers fans are hoping that Herbert doesn’t any time because the team is fighting for a playoff spot. Los Angeles is in a good spot with an 8-4 record, but would love to keep winning and potentially catch the Denver Broncos, who lead the AFC West by a game and a half.

Justin Herbert talks expectations for 2025 season

Herbert has put together a solid 2025 season, throwing for 2,842 yards and 21 touchdowns through 12 games. During the offseason, Herbert spoke to reporters about being in his second season with offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

“I think it’s just continuing to improve on where we need to and taking what we did well last year and continuing to work on that,” Herbert said in June, per Eric Smith of Chargers.com. “Understanding where we fell short, what we need to improve on and taking on that entire body of work from last year and just continuing to improve. I think we’ve got a lot of great film of stuff that we’ve done — route concepts, protections — so guys are comfortable with it. It’s just continuing to get better at that and moving forward.”

Herbert added, “I think we’ve made great strides this offseason. I would say that we’ve gotten a lot better. We’re continuing to put in this offense and master and do everything we can to fully understand it. I think from that standpoint, we’re further ahead than where we were last year.”
