An arrest has been made in connection with the shooting of New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd. The NYPD and U.S. Marshals apprehended a person of interest in Buffalo on Monday, TMZ Sports reported

Law enforcement sources told TMZ that a 20-year-old man was taken into custody. He’s currently being transported back to New York City to face charges. However, they noted that the specific charges have not yet been disclosed.

The development comes a few weeks after Boyd, 29, was shot in the abdomen during an early-morning incident in Midtown Manhattan. According to ABC News, Boyd told detectives he and several friends were involved in a confrontation outside a restaurant. It escalated into gunfire.

Responding officers found Boyd seriously wounded, and he was rushed to Bellevue Hospital. That’s where he remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said at the time that Boyd was “in good spirits,” emphasizing that the organization was focused entirely on his health and family rather than football: “He’s going to come out of this thing really, really well,” Glenn said.

“I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid. That’s the only thing that really went through my mind.”

More on Kris Boyd, New York Jets

Boyd, a seven-year NFL veteran who was on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, has built his career as a physical defensive back and standout special teams performer across stops with Minnesota, Arizona, Houston and now New York. He has appeared in 81 career games, totaling 105 tackles.

He made an appearance in all 17 games for the Texans last season, logging 365 snaps on special teams. Prior to that, Boyd totaled 95 tackles in four seasons with Minnesota and led the Vikings in special teams snaps with 302 as a rookie in 2019 and 403 in 2022.

Moreover, police released images of a person of interest as the investigation intensified. With an arrest now made, authorities continue working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting as Boyd recovers.

The Jets meanwhile continue to await further updates. Regardless, they’re grateful their teammate is expected to pull through what Glenn described as a “terrifying” situation. TMZ Sports noted that Boyd made his return to the Jets’ facility in New Jersey a few days ago, and his teammates were happier than ever to see him.

“It’s not something that we at all thought or knew was going to happen today, so it was a good surprise to see him with such high hopes and positive energy,” tight end Jeremy Ruckert stated, per TMZ.
