Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico has been hospitalized following a frightening incident in which he sustained a reported head injury. A statement from his family says he is “fighting to recover” after getting kicked by a horse.

FOX News reports that Rico was injured while in Spain, his native country, taking part in a pilgrimage. The soccer star was reportedly on his way to Mass with his family when he “suffered a serious mishap due to a mule cart and horse that hit him.”

Rico was kicked in the head by a horse after falling to the ground. The Paris Saint-Germain star was then airlifted to a hospital for care. Per Bleacher Report, Rico was in “serious condition” and in “intensive care” following the accident.

“Sergio is in good hands, fighting to recover while receiving the best care from the medical team at the Virgen del Rocio Hospital,” a statement from the family said. “We must exercise caution, especially during the next 48 hours.”

The team also released a statement about Rico following the accident.

“Paris Saint-Germain learned of Sergio Rico’s accident on Sunday and are in constant contact with his family,” the team said in a statement.

Rico joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2019. The incident occurred just a day after the club won an 11th title.

Teammate visits Sergio Rico in hospital

After hearing about Rico’s condition due to the frightening incident, the goalie’s teammate, Carlos Soler, made a trip to the hospital. Photos and videos emerged of Soler entering the hospital, checking on the condition of Rico.

Soler, a midfielder, joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2022.

Alba Silva, Rico’s partner, sent out a message thanking fans for all of the thoughts and prayers.

“Thank you for all your love for us, Sergio has a lot of people praying for him and he is very strong,” she wrote. “I have no words to describe how I feel. (I only ask respect to the media that give information without contrasting, please).”
