The Royals are finally catching some heat during their 2023 campaign, but their starting fires in all the wrong places.

It hasn’t exactly been a dream start to the season for Kansas City, but they gave their fans and the media something to talk about over the weekend in unique fashion. Edward Oliveras hit a bomb against the Washington Nationals, and it turned into much more than your average home run.

Check out the video below, where Olivares’ home run turned into a serious maintenance problem for the Royals’ scoreboard, as the gigantic piece of electronic art began to smoke after being tattooed.

Alas, the home run ended up being an important one, for more reasons than just a viral social media moment. Olivares’ shot tied the game with the Nationals at two a piece in the eighth inning, bringing cheers for the hometown Royals.

Then, Kansas City gave their fans some more moments to remember, as Michael Massey ripped an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Royals a 3-2 walk-off victory over the Nationals on Sunday.

Next on the docket for the Royals is an inter-league rivalry matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals, who have also left much to be desired on the 2023 season. However, the Cardinals entered the season with much higher aspirations than the Royals, so perhaps they’ll be looking to take some anger out on Kansas City.

Nevertheless, we’re hoping the Kansas City Royals scoreboard operator doesn’t have to work too hard on Memorial Day, but that smoke will have to be put out somehow before the team takes the field again.

More on Kansas City Royals, 2023 Season

Moreover, let’s take a moment to remember the Royals won the World Series in 2015, and Kansas City still have the Chiefs winning Super Bowl after Super Bowl, because that’s the only way fans are going to get through another slog of a baseball season.

It’s been a tough couple of years for the Royals, and that doesn’t look to be changing anytime soon. While they have some young prospects brimming with potential like first baseman Vinny Pasquantino, it takes a lot more than that to turn the tides in the MLB, and the Royals don’t have it at the moment.

Time will tell if Kansas City can turn things around and show some signs of life in 2023, but it may get worse before it gets better for the Royals.
