There are times in football when imagination and improvisation merge to make absolutely incredible plays. That was the case on Sunday afternoon, when former Auburn star Roger McCreary helped the Titans pull off one of the most spectacular interceptions of the season against the LA Chargers. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert fired a 36-yard pass to the left front corner of the end zone. That’s when Titans rookie defensive back Roger McCreary got creative. He realized the football was going to land just out of bounds. He then made a brilliant split-second decision to jump out of the side of the end zone, catch the interception in midair, and toss it back in bounds to his teammate, defensive back Joshua Kalu.

Check out the amazing play by McCreary below. If you watch it in real time, he basically had zero time to pull it off. Somehow, he did it. You can also check out the picture above of McCreary in mid-air.

It’s certainly a play that you don’t see very often. What an incredible play by McCreary. He was one of the best cover corners in college football during his time with the Auburn Tigers and it’s great to see him making spectacular plays like that in the National Football League.

Many Auburn fans will remember that former Tiger legend Karlos Dansby pulled off a very similar type of play against North Carolina in the 2001 Peach Bowl, when he jumped out of bounds and threw the interception back in bounds in mid-air to an awaiting Dontarrious Thomas. Those two were one of the best linebacking tandems in college football history and it was only fitting to see them make such a spectacular play.

The Titans lost their game against the Chargers, 17-14, but it wasn’t because of a lack of effort from McCreary. In the 2022 season thus far, he’s racked up 60 tackles, one interception, and four passes defended. He really deserves some type of credit for the interception on Sunday against Herbert, if we’re being truly honest. That one won’t go down in the stat sheet, but he deserves it.
