Dallas Cowboys legendary offensive lineman Tyron Smith will sign a one-day contract and retire with the team, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Smith played 13 seasons with the Cowboys before spending his final season with the New York Jets.

Tyron Smith was selected by the Cowboys at No. 9 overall in the 2011 NFL Draft. During his 13 seasons with the Cowboys, Smith was selected to the Pro Bowl eight times, named to the All-Pro Team five times and was voted to the 2010s All-Decade Team.

In March 2024, Smith signed a one-year contract with the Jets and started the first 10 games of the season. He missed the rest of the regular season due to a neck injury. Shortly after signing with the Jets, Smith explained why he made the move.

“I saw that, what they [the Jets] can do as far as the team, and everyone wants to win as any team does,” Smith, per the team’s Twitter account. “I just feel like they have all the pieces together right now with the final pieces this offseason to produce a team that could go all the way. I played against Aaron [Rodgers] throughout my career a couple times [in the postseason]. I know what kind of quarterback he is. I know what he can do if you just give him a little bit of time. I’m just here to do my best to give him that time.”

Dallas Cowboys did not want to move on from Tyron Smith

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he did not want to move on from Smith. “You can imagine the relationship we’ve got with Tyron and how much both of us hated to do,” Jones said at the NFL Annual Meeting last year, per CBS Sports. “It was just like it was with DeMarcus Ware. We both hated it. But it just wasn’t there.”

Jones added, “You know how highly he is thought of by us. We can’t afford that. We can’t afford that. If he makes all of these incentives and things like that, we would be really wrecked.”

With Tyron Smith getting set to announce his retirement with the Cowboys he will likely be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor soon. We can also expect him to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame when he’s eligible in five years.
