CB Mason Lewis commits to California: ‘I loved their plan of development for me’

Chandler (Ariz.) Basha three-star cornerback Mason Lewis received offers from 15 schools. California extended one on May 26.
Since then, the Golden Bears have been recruiting Lewis hard and their coaching staff has spoken with him multiple times. Minnesota and Vanderbilt – who finished second in Lewis’ recruitment – were serious contenders for the 5-foot-10, 180-pound defensive back, but he has committed to California and is headed to Berkeley for his college football career.
“I loved their plan of development for me,” Lewis told Rivals. “It was something that really stood out to me during my official visit there. I loved their plan and the area, since I’m originally from there. Also, I really like the opportunity they’re offering me. By going there, I will have the opportunity to see the field early.”
“When the coaches laid out their plan of development for me, it really signified their knowledge and that they know what they’re talking about,” he added. “Being back in the area felt comfortable to me.”
Lewis’ official was his first time seeing the Golden Bears and he plans to return to California’s campus multiple times during the season. He likes the “calm” vibe in Berkeley and how everyone in the program is serious “about their business.”

The three-star is “locked into” his commitment with the ACC program, yet is still planning to keep his mind “open” if anything changes over the next five months. But for now, he is very excited about his pledge to California. A key factor in his decision was assistant defensive backs coach Allen Brown.
“I have the best relationship on the staff with coach Allen Brown,” Lewis said. “What I love the most about him is his relatability and his youth.”
Head coach Justin Wilcox also played a role in Lewis choosing the Golden Bears.
“Coach Wilcox is a very down-to-earth dude,” Lewis said. “… I love his defensive mind and his philosophy about winning.”
