On the Fourth of July, Stanford football landed a commitment from 2026 3-star edge rusher Sarrel Howard out of Inglewood High School in Inglewood, California. Howard took an official visit to Stanford the weekend of June 21st, also holding offers from Syracuse, Washington State, San Diego State, Nevada, Minnesota (official visit May 30th), and Arizona State.

Hudl: Sarrel Howard

Listed at 6’3”, 225 pounds, Howard plays with great instinct. He has an excellent feel for the game and does a good job making the right reads with respect to tracking where the ball is. Whether it be the quarterback or running back, Howard knows how to make life difficult on them.

Something that immediately stands out when watching Howard’s film is how quick he is off the line of scrimmage. His quick first step makes it hard to slow him down. He gets around offensive tackles with a nice burst of lightning, giving opposing quarterbacks little time to get the ball out of their hands.

Due to Howard’s physical gifts, he has the ability to drop back in coverage and make an impact in that area as well. A big part of that is being able to make the right reads. As it stands, he projects to play at outside linebacker at Stanford, meaning he’ll have to be doing a fair amount of dropping back in addition to rushing.

Even though he only has a 5.5 Rivals rating, Sarrel Howard appears to be a guy who could easily exceed that rating. He certainly is not small for an outside linebacker and has a quick burst off the edge. He certainly has all the pieces to be someone who can make an impact on the Cardinal defense whether he’s asked to blitz, drop back in coverage, or simply stay in his gap. I look forward to seeing what he brings to Stanford and how he grows during his senior year at Inglewood.
