Reese Alston, a highly-regarded guard out of Second Baptist HS (TX), has scheduled his first official visit to Louisville for this upcoming weekend, according to 247Sports‘ Brandon Jenkins.

The class of 2027’s No. 2-ranked point guard will be on campus for the Cardinals’ upcoming matchup with the Memphis Tigers, which is slated for 3:30 ET on Saturday, December 13th.

The 6-foot-2, 160-pound guard has made prior unofficial visits to Kentucky, LSU, SMU, and Wichita State. He’s also expected to make an official visit to Purdue.

He is also coming off a state championship the year prior, while winning multiple accolades throughout the summer. During the AAU season, he played with Cooz Elite 16U, winning the PUMA PRO16 title with this team. He was also invited to multiple prestigious camps, such as the John Lucas Invitational, Pangos All-American Camp, Wootten Top 150 Camp, and NBPA Top 100 Camp.

The five-star guard is also the son of former NBA player Rafer Alston, who played 11 years in the league. His career averages were 10.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 1.2 steals per game, according to Sports Reference.

Pat Kelsey and the Cardinals have already struck in Alston’s, earning the commitment of 6-foot-7 three-star power forward Ferlandes Wright. He is currently the year’s No. 1 in-state prospect.

Reese Alston Scouting Report

Where Alston really shines is on the offensive end with his creative flair with the ball in his hands. He’s dynamic when creating his own space, using an array of dribble moves and changing speeds to break down defenders. He plays with great pace and uses that to his advantage. Additionally, he’s the type of guard that doesn’t need ball-screens to generate paint touches or space.

When generating space for himself, he has the ability to knock down shots or set up teammates. Even though he didn’t shoot it as well towards the end of the PUMA summer season, he has trustworthy mechanics and can knock down shots off the dribble. Where he excels is around the rim as a slasher. He has great body control, with the ability to hang in the air and contort his body for different finishes around the rim. He’s also a polished finisher with either hand, which makes him tougher to defend when he’s attacking downhill. His playmaking can’t be taken for granted either, especially with his ability to consistently touch the paint. He has the ability to make jump passes to open shooters on the perimeter, or play with patience off two feet to make the right read.

Defensively, Alston can be gamble-prone and try to play lanes for steals. He can leave the team defense compromised at times, but has shown instincts as a defensive playmaker off the ball. His defensive discipline could improve to minimize his blunders as a team defender, but there is no denying that he has the lateral quickness and IQ to improve on this end of the floor.

During the 2025-26 HS season, the junior guard is averaging 23.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 3.0 steals per game.

How does he fit into Louisville’s system?

Alston would be a good fit in Kelsey’s system due to his on-ball creativity. He would fill a similar role to Mikel Brown Jr. due to his exceptional ball skills. He also fits Kelsey’s offensive philosophies in terms of paint touches, finishing at the rim, and stretching the floor. His playmaking abilities would be maximized due to all of the perimeter shooting Louisville would likely surround him with.

On the defensive end, surrounding him with quality team defenders would be ideal, as his defensive discipline can vary. Having quality help defenders to offset his tendencies to play passing lanes would be preferred. Kelsey would get more out of him defensively, as he has the athletic tools and instincts to improve.
