Deion Sanders health update: Colorado coach downplays benefit of bye week following procedure

When Colorado got an incredible win over Iowa State, Boulder was sent into a frenzy. Just another big-time win for head coach Deion Sanders, as the season got right back on track. Momentum felt to be in the Buffaloes’ favor at the time before taking some time off due to the bye week.

Players got to rest up, and so did Sanders, who has been dealing with health problems throughout the year. However, he downplayed the idea of the week off being a positive for him. Sanders would, instead, like to keep the ball rolling.

“It wasn’t important for me,” Sanders said during a press conference. “I like to go. After a win like that, you want to keep going. You don’t want a bye week, you want to keep the momentum going. And keep going, period.”

Blood clots required Sanders to undergo surgery earlier in October. Still, he remained around the program and continued to march on. Sore from the procedure, Sanders even coached from a golf cart to stay involved during practices throughout the week.

For him, there appears to be more to life than worrying about his health issues at the detriment of the team. He wants to remain in the mix and uses his faith as an outlet to do so.

“I don’t need recharging, man,” Sanders said. “I mean, God got me. I know that sounds like a cliche but I’m not lying. God got me. So, when I go through things, it’s for others to glean from and say ‘You know what? If he can fight through this, I can fight through that. If he can walk through that storm, I can walk through that storm.’ It’s not for me because I know he has me and I’m one of his soldiers and he uses me mightily.”

Colorado gets back on the field this Saturday, renewing a rivalry with Utah. Salt Lake City plays host as the Utes are looking to rebound from a Holy War loss vs. BYU. An important one for both, as a win is almost required to have a chance of remaining in the Big 12 Championship race.

Sanders just maybe wishes the game had taken place a week earlier. Colorado flew high after taking down Iowa State and thankfully has another opportunity to do so — this time on the road. No recharge required in Boulder, at least for the head coach.
