For the first time in 21 years, Iowa State took down Iowa on the wrestling mat. The sixth-ranked Cyclones won six matches and beat the third-ranked Hawkeyes 20-14 on Sunday, snapping Iowa’s streak of 20 straight dual victories in the series. The win came before a crowd of 12,292 at Hilton Coliseum, the 10th-largest in the venue’s history.

With the victory, Iowa State now leads the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series 11-2. The Cyclones can clinch the all-sports competition next week when the ISU women’s basketball team hosts Iowa on Dec. 10.

Top-ranked heavyweight Yonger Bastida opened the dual with an 11-4 decision over No. 6 Ben Kueter, using a takedown in each period. Kueter escaped in the final second to avoid a major decision. Iowa answered at 125 pounds, where No. 7 Dean Peterson scored a late takedown to beat No. 9 Stevo Poulin 4-2.

The Cyclones regained control at 133, as No. 6 Evan Frost upset No. 3 Drake Ayala 11-5. Frost trailed 3-2 entering the third period before reeling off three takedowns, including two in the final 34 seconds.

At 141, No. 6 Anthony Echemendia rolled to a 15-2 major decision over No. 7 Nasir Bailey, scoring takedowns in every period. Iowa took the 149-pound match when No. 10 Ryder Block edged No. 2 Paniro Johnson 2-1 in the first tiebreaker.

Iowa State struck again after intermission. No. 3 Vinny Zerban delivered an 11-3 major decision over No. 12 Jordan Williams at 157 pounds, using two third-period takedowns and securing a riding-time point. Iowa responded with a dominant win at 165, as No. 3 Michael Caliendo posted a 20-5 technical fall over No. 22 Connor Euton in 6:16.

At 174, No. 11 MJ Gaitan earned the biggest win of his career, edging No. 2 Patrick Kennedy 9-8 in the first tiebreaker. Gaitan led 8-5 entering the third period before being hit with three stalling calls, the last of which tied the match with four seconds left. He escaped 12 seconds into the first tiebreaker and rode out Kennedy in the final 30 seconds.

Iowa tied the dual at 184 pounds, where top-ranked Angelo Ferrari used a third-period stalling point to beat No. 10 Isaac Dean 2-1.

With the outcome still undecided, Iowa State’s No. 2 Rocky Elam sealed the dual at 197 pounds. Elam controlled No. 4 Massoma Endene throughout an 8-2 victory, recording takedowns in the first and third periods and keeping Endene at bay until late escapes.
