Former Minnesota Golden Gophers quarterback Max Brosmer is going to get his opportunity.

On Friday, it became official that the former Gophers quarterback Max Brosmer will start the Minnesota Vikings’ matchup against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon in Seattle. He will be the first former Minnesota quarterback to start an NFL game since Mike Hohensee, who started a pair of games for the Chicago Bears in 1987 as a replacement player.

Brosmer gets the nod as the Vikings’ starting quarterback, and former Michigan national championship-winning quarterback J.J. McCarthy misses time while in concussion protocol.

Brosmer this season is 5-for-8 for 42 yards.

In his lone season with the Golden Gophers, Brosmer completed 268-of-403 passing attempts for 2,828 yards and 18 touchdowns while rushing for five additional touchdowns.

He would go undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft but signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent. In the preseason, Bromser started 61% of his passes for 364 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

Greg Harbaugh Jr. on Brosmer starting

On Wednesday, Gophers’ offensive coordinator Greg Harbaugh Jr. was asked about Brosmer potentially starting on Sunday.

“I think if you have Max in the room right now and you said two years ago, when I called him, if he would’ve been starting in week 13 his rookie year, he would’ve looked at you like you were crazy,” Harbaugh said. “It’s very fun.”

“We watched Wes Phillips’ press conference bits and pieces this morning in the quarterback room. It was really cool to see him talk, and Coach O’Connell talked about Max throughout the year and going into this week — he’s the same.”

“Wes talked about him standing in the back, reading the play, hearing it in his helmet, going through his footwork. He’s doing the same things,” Harbaugh continued.

The Gophers’ coordinator continues to see Brosmer do the small things that have helped put him in a position to be the Vikings’ starting quarterback.

“We’ve seen things on Twitter in training camp. It’s no surprise,” he said. “There are three quarterbacks back there standing when JJ’s in, and Max is the only one doing the footwork, and it’s paying off. He’s a process-driven guy. I have not talked to him. I’m not going to talk to him. I know his process and what he’s going through, and I’m really excited for him.”

“I talked to his parents. It’s an exciting time for him. It’s an exciting time for a guy from football too, because he was here, he was starting for us, and now he’s going to get an opportunity of a lifetime to go out there and do his thing.”
