Nebraska football is 7-4 overall and 4-4 in the Big Ten as it enters the final week of the regular season.

The team’s latest game ended in a loss to Penn State on the road as the Nittany Lions blew out the Huskers, 37-10, on Saturday night in State College.

Now, Iowa Week is here.

The Huskers will welcome the Hawkeyes (7-4, 5-3) at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln for the annual Black Friday rivalry game (11 a.m. CT kickoff on CBS) for a conference battle that will likely determine which tier of bowl game each squad is invited to play in.

Hopes of a transcendent run to a College Football Playoff berth have been dashed ever since the loss to USC. Still, in a pivotal season, there remain a great deal of benchmarks left to accomplish this season.

Nebraska, in what was a de facto CFP elimination game, came out firing and held a 14-6 lead before the game flipped on a dime. Dylan Raiola’s season-ending injury halted the Huskers’ momentum in the third quarter, and USC took over to end the CFP aspirations for Rhule and Co.

Still, there was plenty to play for, and Nebraska proved it was up for the challenge when it went on the road to beat UCLA, 28-21, three weeks ago.

Now, after getting taken to task in Happy Valley, the Huskers take their 7-4 mark – which includes a 4-2 record in one-score games – into the season’s final game. Nebraska has already clinched the program’s best regular-season record since 2016. The Huskers’ 9-3 mark from that season is no longer in play, but they can still reach the eight-win threshold in the regular season for the first time since

Nebraska has one more chance to get it done, and it comes against the rivalry opponent that Matt Rhule has yet to beat, having lost to Iowa by the score of 13-10 each of the last two seasons – both coming after a Huskers’ turnover with less than 20 seconds remaining was followed by Iowa kicking a game-winning field goal as time expired.
