The week that was in Mizzou sports: Nov. 24-30

With the final week of the football season taking most of the focus, it’s easy to miss everything else going on in Mizzou sports. Here’s a look at what MizzouToday wasn’t able to cover the past week.

Women’s Basketball

Mizzou opened the Fort Myers Tip-Off event in Florida with a win against Bradley on Friday, 73-66.

Grace Slaughter led the way for Mizzou with a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds. Chloe Sotell earned the start and scored 14 points while hitting four 3-pointers. Sotell added four rebounds and three assists.

Jordana Reisma added 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Shannon Dowell contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Mizzou shot 31-of-59 (52.5 percent) from the field, 9-of-23 (39.1 percent) from 3 and 2-of-5 (40 percent) from the free-throw line. The Tigers out rebounded Bradley 44-30.

Mizzou didn’t get to bask in the win for long as the Tigers lined up against Northwestern the next day and handed the Wildcats their first loss with an 85-70 victory.

Slaughter produced one of the best games of her career in the win, contributing 33 points, nine rebounds and five assists. That put her past 1,000 career points.

Dowell added a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds to go with four assists.

Sotell contributed 11 points with three 3-pointers, while Reisma added 10 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Jayla Smith added 15 points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench.

Mizzou shot 31-of-63 (49.2 percent) from the field, 10-of-20 (50 percent) from 3 and 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) from the free-throw line.

The Tigers won the battle for points in the paint 40-24 and out rebounded Northwestern 38-32.

Mizzou (7-2) will return home to host Cal in the ACC/SEC Challenge at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Wretling

No. 11 Mizzou took on No. 9 Illinois for a second consecutive match Monday, with the Illini taking a 21-16 win at the Hearnes Center.

At 125, No. 25 Mack Mauger upset No. 22 Spencer Moore by a 5-2 decision in sudden victory overtime to put Mizzou in front.

But No. 1 Lucas Byrd bested Mizzou’s No. 20 Kade Moore by 12-9 decision at 133. Then No. 15 Danny Pucino earned a 12-6 decision against No. 20 Zeke Seltzer at 141.

No. 14 Josh Edmond tied the match at six with a 6-2 decision against Will Baysingar at 149, but Illinois took the lead for good when No. 7 Kannon Webster earned a 4-1 decision against No. 20 J Conway at 157.

No. 8 Braeden Scoles bested Dominic Bambinelli by 18-4 major decision at 165, then No. 21 Colin Kelly won an 11-2 major decision against Danny Heiser at 174.

Mizzou’s No. 2 Aeoden Sinclair won by injury default against No. 22 Chris Moore at 184, then No. 17 Evan Bates won a 14-6 major decision against Cade Lautt at 197.

In the final bout, No. 9 Luke Huffman bested No. 25 Jarrett Stoner by a 13-3 major decision.

Mizzou (5-4) will go to Journeymen Wrestling – Hustle in the Heartland to face LIU at 6 p.m. Friday in St. Charles. The Tigers will then take on No. 5 Nebraska at 8 p.m. Friday.
