Hoops: Sooners blown out in disappointing performance at Arizona State

This week for Oklahoma ended up being one step forward and two steps back.

The Sooners snagged an impressive win at Wake Forest on Tuesday, with an opportunity to build on that momentum at Arizona State on Saturday.

Instead, it was all Sun Devils. The Sooners lost control early and never recovered, falling 86-70.

It was an ugly start for the Sooners, who trailed Arizona State 27-6 midway through the first half. The Sun Devils jumped out to a big lead behind a 27-2 run, which included a scoring drought of just two points in over eight minutes for the Sooners.

The Sooners went into halftime trailing 47-28. They shot just 38% in the first half, while the Sun Devils shot 55% from the field and 70% (7/10) from 3.

The Sooners found a better rhythm in the second half, but the defense just wasn’t good enough for most of the game. Arizona State shot 47% from the field and a blistering 54% from the 3-point line.

Both teams nearly drew even in rebounds, turnovers, free throws. But bad defense and bench points (40 ASU, 28 OU) were too much to overcome.

Xzvayier Brown and Tae Davis both led the Sooners with 11 points. Jeff Nwanwko added 10 points. The Sooners shot just 35% from the field and 27% from the 3-point line.

With the loss, the Sooners fall to 6-3. They are now 1-3 in Quad 1 and Quad 2 games.

Next up for the Sooners? It’ll be Bedlam next Saturday (12 p.m.) against Oklahoma State on Fox.
