Some surprising news on the eve of tomorrow’s big game between No. 9 Notre Dame and No. 22 Pitt.

Matt Zenitz from CBS Sports is reporting that Pitt freshman kicker Trey Butkowski is expected to miss tomorrow’s game due to an illness.

Pitt looked to have the edge in this area as Notre Dame is coming into this game with many questions concerning their kicking position. However, it this report is accurate and Butkowski doesn’t play, Pitt no longer has the decided edge.

Earlier this season, Butkowski set a Pitt record by connecting on 16 consecutive field goals. The previous record was 15 consecutive makes by Ben Sauls from 2023-24.

On the season, the freshman from Florida is 19 of 21 in field goal attempts and 35-for-36 on PATs this season.

Butkowski joined Pitt as a walk-on in June of 2025 after graduating from Lake Nona High School, where he earned first team all-conference honors, including setting a school for with a 58-yard field goal.

If Butkowski isn’t able to go, the kicking duties could go to redshirt sophomore Sam Carpenter.
