Texas Tech begins it’s most anticipated season in years ranked No. 24 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, joining four other Big 12 teams. This is the fourth time Tech has been ranked in the preseason coaches poll and first time since 2023 when Tech also started the year slotted at No. 24. The team’s highest recorded preseason ranking by coaches came with a No. 14 spot to start 2008.

How Texas Tech’s Schedule Sets Up Versus Ranked Opponents

After a busy offseason a lot of expectation swirls around a Red Raider program looking to make a push for its first conference title in school history. They will start the season ranked below four other Big 12 teams per the coaches poll: No. 11 Arizona State, No. 20 Kansas State, No. 22 BYU and No. 23 Iowa State.

Tech will get their shot at three of these teams in the regular season, with two of the three coming on the road. They take on the Sun Devils in Tempe on October 18, Wildcats in Manhattan November 1 and BYU at home on Nov 8. With 16 teams in the Big 12 now there is an unbalanced scheduling look and Texas Tech will not play Iowa State unless the two match up in the conference title game.

Also receiving votes from the Big 12 were Utah, Baylor, TCU, Colorado and Kansas.

The season gets underway on August 30th at 6:30 pm with a home game versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

About the US LBM Coaches Poll
The US LBM Coaches Poll is conducted weekly throughout the regular season using a panel of head coaches at Football Bowl Subdivision schools. The panel is chosen by random draw, conference by conference, plus independents, from a pool of coaches who have indicated to the American Football Coaches Association their willingness to participate. Each coach submits a Top 25 with a first-place vote worth 25 points, second place 24, and so on down to one point for 25th.

About US LBM
US LBM, one of the nation’s leading distributors of specialty building materials, partnered with USA TODAY Sports and the American Football Coaches Association to sponsor the Coaches Poll, announced Aug. 30, 2023. The agreement called for the weekly ranking will be named the US LBM Coaches Poll through 2026.
