Movers and Shakers of the Week

Fresh off their series win over UCLA, Oregon is one of our biggest risers, moving up to No. 9 from No. 12. The Ducks are now in sole possession of first place in the Big 10. Texas Tech got a much-needed series win over Arizona and is up from No. 16 to No. 13. Finally, Alabama is up from No. 19 to No. 17. The Crimson Tide seemed to be primed for a hosting spot with the number one strength of schedule and double-digit Quad One wins.

It was an extremely tough weekend for Virginia Tech as they lost two out of three to Pittsburgh. The Hokies dropped from No. 11 to No. 14. Mississippi State’s trip to Norman was not a delightful one,. The Bulldogs dropped down from No. 17 to No. 20. LSU saw its placement in our composite rankings drop slightly from No. 9 to No. 11.

Big Bats Need to Show Up in Huge Series

The Red River Rivalry is one of the biggest series this weekend. Oklahoma and Texas are tied for second place in the SEC with two weeks to go. The Sooners rank 8th in the country in runs per game, while the Longhorns rank 12th. With both teams averaging more than three extra-base hits per game, this feels like a series where the bats could reign supreme.

With Virginia Tech sitting two games behind Florida State, this weekend’s series against California feels like a must-sweep for the Hokies. California has struggled in conference play, going 7-11 thus far. The Hokies need the team that scored 21 runs in five innings in the middle game last week against Pittsburgh.

LSU continues its tough stretch as it entertains Florida this weekend. The Tigers have dropped to 9-9 in conference play and are in danger of finishing in the bottom half of the league. Tori Edwards and Maci Bergeron have paced the Tigers’ offense, combining for 25 home runs and 110 RBIs. Comparatively, Florida continues to be one of the most electric offenses in the country, averaging nearly eight runs per game. Taylor Shumaker is also one of the best freshmen this year with 16 home runs and 68 RBIs.
