Alabama’s men’s basketball program is back on a roll on the recruiting trail. Moments ago, Nate Oats and Company earned a commitment from Richmond (Va.) Word of God Christian Academy shooting guard Davin Cosby.

Cosby, a top-100 prospect in his class, picked the Tide over three other finalists. Bama beat out N.C. State, in-state Virginia, and Wake Forest to land Cosby on Saturday.

As for why Alabama earned Cosby’s commitment, consistency with him and a stellar official visit this month were two key reasons why.

On the consistency front, Cosby has heard from assistant coach Antoine Pettway multiple times per week since being offered in July. Pettway visited him at midnight on the first day of the basketball recruiting period on Sept. 9, with Oats making two stops to see him this month as well.

As for his official visit, Cosby got to watch the team working together while on campus. After seeing Bama take the court and hearing the pitch from the staff, Cosby said he could see himself fitting in at Alabama.

“Alabama is a team that not only shoots, but shoots threes,” Cosby previously told BamaInsider. “They get out quick in transition. That’s what I do. They need guys that can make them. That’s something I can do to come in and become a part of the process.

“The way Coach Oats and Coach Pettway take care of their guys,” Cosby added. “Also, the facilities. I was really amazed by what they had.”

Along with Cosby, Alabama holds commitments from power forward Sam Walters and in-state guard R.J. Johnson. Of course, the staff is not yet done with pursuing recruits in the 2023 class.

This weekend, the Crimson Tide are playing host to Oklahoma native Kaden Cooper for an official visit. A couple of weeks ago, Bama also welcomed elite shooting guard Kris Parker on campus for his official. Assistant coach Bryan Hodgson also recently extended an offer to top-10 point guard Silas Demary Jr.

Davin Cosby On3 High School Scouting Summary

To learn more about Davin Cosby’s skill set and what made him a coveted uncommitted prospect, we turn to On3’s scouting report on Alabama’s newest commit.

“Davin Cosby is a long-armed wing prospect,” the report reads. “At 6-foot-5, his calling card is his shooting. He has a smooth shooting stroke that extends beyond the three-point line. The release point is consistent and he shoots with great balance. Cosby needs to continue developing off the bounce. Some initiation ability would enhance his profile as a prospect; it would also help his ability to create his own shot.

“Right now he is mostly a spot shooter, letting others create opportunities for him,” the report continues. “Cosby is a very good athlete in straight lines. He can attack sloppy closeouts off ball rotation and finish above the rim. He has some toughness, is a solid team defender, and a good rebounder from the wing.”

On3’s Class of 2023 rankings tab Cosby as the No. 90 overall player in this cycle. It also labels him the No. 18 shooting guard and the fourth-ranked senior in North Carolina.
