The Alabama basketball program received some exciting news on Saturday evening, as word broke that Jahvon Quinerly will return to Tuscaloosa for another season. The team’s starting point guard made the announcement himself via his official Twitter account.

The tweet was simple, yet revealing.

“I’ll keep it short and simple,” he said. “I’m coming back.”

In some ways, the news might not be all that surprising. Quinerly suffered an unfortunate knee injury in a first-round loss to Notre Dame in the NCAA Tournament last month. That injury had caused the 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior to fall down draft boards for several NBA teams.

Soon after the loss to Notre Dame, coach Nate Oats said Quinerly’s original plan was to “test the draft process,” but those plans were altered as a result of the injury. Now, it looks like he’ll spend the 2022-23 season in Tuscaloosa with his sights on the 2023 NBA Draft.

How much will he be able to contribute on the court? That remains to be seen, but even just having his veteran presence in the Alabama locker room could be beneficial for what should be a roster almost entirely made up of new players.

Last season, Quinerly averaged 13.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game for the Crimson Tide. Those were all career-highs for the former Villanova transfer.

Coming out of high school, Quinerly was a five-star prospect and rated as the nation’s No. 8 overall player and No. 1 point guard, according to the On3 Consensus rankings. He transferred to Alabama in 2019 after just one season as a Wildcat.

After sitting out that season, Quinerly has been a key player for Oats and company.
