Alabama maintains top 4 spot in newest College Football Playoff rankings

The College Football Playoff selection committee revealed their second batch of rankings on Tuesday night, where Alabama once again came in at No. 4.
The ranking is unchanged for the Crimson Tide (8-1, 6-0 SEC), who beat LSU at home 20-9 last weekend to win its eighth consecutive game. If the playoff were to start today, Alabama’s current place in the field would give it a first round bye along with the other top four seeds. It would face the winner of No. 5 Georgia and No. 24 (12-seed) South Florida in the quarterfinal round.
Alabama continues to have one of the strongest resumes in the country, currently holding wins over three teams ranked by the committee: No. 5 Georgia, No. 14 Vanderbilt, and No. 23 Tennessee. The Tide could add to that total this weekend, as No. 11 Oklahoma will come to Bryant-Denny Stadium (2:30 p.m., ABC).
This is the second year of the 12-team playoff, and the automatic qualifier rules have remained the same. The five highest ranked conference champions are guaranteed a spot in the field at season’s end, including the Power Four conferences and the highest ranked champion from a Group of Five conference.

The biggest change to the format this season is that first round byes are not exclusive to conference champions. As opposed to the top four conference champions receiving a first round bye, now the top four seeds as ranked by the committee will be the ones that receive a bye to the quarterfinal round.
The committee will continue to release updated rankings every Tuesday night until conference championship week. The final rankings will be released during the CFP selection show on the morning of Sunday, Dec. 7.
