Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage cornerback Earl Little Jr. has committed to Alabama. His pledge now makes four on the day for the Crimson Tide, joining defensive lineman Khurtiss Perry, wide receiver Shazz Preston and edge rusher Jihaad Campbell.

Little may be the lowest-ranked out of those new additions, but he could also prove to be the most important. Alabama already had one other corner, Trequon Fegans, sign on Wednesday, but it remains a position of need.

We already know Marcus Banks is in the transfer portal. Plus, starters Josh Jobe and Jalyn Armour-Davis could both leave for the NFL. If that happens, the cupboard — at least from a depth standpoint — could be left a little bare. That’s why Little is such an important get.

The 6-foot, 180-pound defender is an On3 Consensus four-star prospect who is rated as the No. 88 overall player and No. 11 cornerback.

His father, Earl Little Sr., played at Miami, which is a major reason the Hurricanes were pressing so hard for his signature. Ultimately, the younger Little decided he wanted to play for coach Nick Saban at Alabama. The importance of that decision cannot be overstated.

Granted, it is still possible that Alabama could land five-star cornerback Denver Harris, who is waiting until 3 p.m. on Friday to decide between the Crimson Tide and Texas A&M. But the Aggies are considered the favorites at this time.

Here’s what On3 has to say about Little:

“Thinly built defensive back with the technical savvy to play multiple spots in the secondary. High-end quickness is supplemented by his ability to process the game quickly. Has the cover skills to play at corner, nickel or safety. Plays with edgy confidence and physicality. Doesn’t back down from a challenge and throws his body around as a tackler. Tested against top competition in South Florida. Will need to continue adding mass to his frame at the next level and lacks verified speed and athleticism.”
