Auburn men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl on Tuesday announced the signing of two of the top recruits in the country.

Four-star point guard Tre Donaldson and four-star combo guard Chance Westry both signed with Auburn during the early signing period, which runs Nov. 10-17.

Donaldson ‘a basketball player’

Donaldson, from FSU School in Tallahassee, Fla., is a two-sport star. He excels in both basketball and football in high school and plans to play both at Auburn.

As a junior in basketball, Donaldson led FSU School to a 19-2 record, averaging 11.2 points, 3.8 assists and 4 rebounds per game. In football, Donaldson is playing quarterback his senior season and has FSU School in the second-round of the playoffs.

Donaldson was injured the first half of the football season, but returned and has completed 47-of-69 passes for 635 with six touchdowns and two interceptions. He also has rushed for 307 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries, and added nine tackles, an interception and two forced fumbles on defense.

“Tre is like having another coach on the floor,” Pearl told AuburnTigers.com. “He has a very high basketball IQ and is a great communicator. He brings a football toughness and mentality to the game and is a great leader. He makes plays for himself and others in ball screen.

“Even though he’s one of the best strong safeties in the country in high school and is one of the greatest two-sport athletes in his class, Tre is a basketball player.”

Westry ‘wants to be great’

Westry, at Compass Prep in Arizona, is the No. 1 shooting guard in the class, according to the On3 Consensus ranking. He’s also the No. 35 overall player.

Still, Pearl believes the rankings are too low.

“Chance is one of the most underrated prospects in this class,” Pearl said. “We run a four-guard system, and he has great versatility to play with and without the basketball.

“He is a long, active defender with a really high basketball IQ. He can get downhill and score through traffic but is a really willing passer.”

As a sophomore at Trinity in Pennsylvania, Westry averaged 24.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. He was named the Class 3A Player of the Year and surpassed 1,000 points in two seasons before transferring to Sierra Canyon in California. In five games last season at Sierra Canyon, Westry averaged 14.2 points per game.

“Chance has tremendous upside and wants to be great,” Pearl said.
