AUBURN – For the third time in the last five seasons, the Auburn baseball program played in a Super Regional. And for the second time, Butch Thompson’s squad made the College World Series.

It’s the sixth all-time appearance in the College World Series for Auburn. That means a third of the all-time appearances have occurred under Thompson in the last four seasons.

It’s a remarkable program-building job by Thompson. Auburn doesn’t have the state lottery to help supplement the lack of scholarships (11.7 to split among an entire team) like some programs, and they are lacking in facilities compared to others as well. Still, Thompson, Tim Hudson, Gabe Gross and Karl Nonemaker are flat out getting the job done on the highest level.

The program Auburn just defeated has three national championships, including one in 2018. They were No. 2 in RPI entering the tournament and featured arguably the best starting pitcher in college baseball, along with maybe the best 1-5 hitters in the nation, all hitting well above .300 for the season.

Auburn is one of 10 programs nationally to make three Super Regionals since 2018.

They’ve won nine straight Regional games, including six of the nine on the road. And now, the Tigers have won four of their last six Super Regional games, including two winner-take-all games on the road. Even the Super Regional loss at Florida in 2018 went three games.

Auburn baseball only lost two straight games three times this season, and only once was it been in back-to-back days: that was against of all teams, at Mississippi State in April. After defeating Oregon State after the game two loss, that stat remains.

That’s a model of consistency, if nothing else.

Auburn only managed three hits in the deciding Super Regional game, five less than Oregon State. The Tigers’ record this season when recording less hits than their opponent was 7-15 entering Monday night.

Now, that’s 8-15.
