New Auburn football coach Hugh Freeze will not retain defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh, Auburn Live’s Jeffrey Lee has learned. Brumbaugh, a former Auburn defensive lineman, served for one full season as defensive line coach.

He has been let go effective, immediately.

Brumbaugh was brought in during Bryan Harsin’s second year in 2022 as defensive line coach and just finished up his first full season on the staff.

Brumbaugh’s football history as player and coach

Brumbaugh donned the orange and blue from 1995 to 1999.

Brumbaugh started 44 games and had 291 tackles and 15 sacks as a Tiger. He was named to the SEC All-Freshman team in 1995. Then he earned second-team All-SEC honors as a sophomore in 1996. He then earned first-team All-SEC honors as a junior in 1997.

As a coach, Brumbaugh spent time at both Colorado and Maryland as the defensive line coach. He was also co-defensive coordinator while at Maryland. He also had smaller stints at Syracuse, LSU, Kentucky, and Louisiana Tech.

Brumbaugh then became a defensive analyst at Oregon before joining Harsin’s staff at Auburn.

Recruiting under Brumbaugh

Brumbaugh, joining in the second year of Harsin’s tenure, had to shift his focus to the transfer portal to help build depth on the defensive line. He had a hand in picking up edge transfer Marcus Bragg from Western Kentucky, Oregon DL transfer Jayson Jones, and Memphis transfer Morris Joseph. All three contributed in 2022.

Currently, Brumbaugh has one defensive lineman committed in the 2023 class in 3-star Jamarrion Harkless.

Auburn defensive line job now open

The Auburn defensive line coaching job is now open. The Tigers, under Hugh Freeze, will be looking to find a replacement in the coming days.

Auburn is going to have to look to the portal for immediate help with as low as seven scholarship players expected to return at defensive line and edge combined.
