Auburn Super Regional: Coastal Carolina sweeps, Tigers' season ends

AUBURN — The season is over for No. 4 national seed Auburn.
No. 13 national seed Coastal Carolina took the lead in the seventh inning and shut the Tigers down in the final two frames to secure the Super Regional sweep. Coastal Carolina has now won 23 straight games.
Auburn’s season finishes with a 41-20 overall record.
Both teams battled through the heat and humidity, plus a short turnaround after game one ended after 1 am CT on Saturday morning. Combined on the day, the two teams left 24 men on base, hit 9-for-43 with runners on base and hit 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
Auburn finished 0-for-4 with RISP. The Tigers finished 1-for-14 with RISP in the two Super Regional losses. With runners on base, Auburn hit 3-for-19, and their leadoff hitters were 2-for-10 in the loss. Coastal Carolina leadoff hitters went 6-for-8 in the win.
Only two of Coastal Carolina’s four runs were earned. Auburn pitching hit three Coastal Carolina batters, one came with the bases loaded, resulting in a run scored. An error at first base by Cooper McMurray allowed another Coastal Carolina run.
Coastal Carolina starter Jacob Morrison, a potential first-round pick, threw six innings, allowing one run, while striking out six. Hayden Johnson was marvelous out of the bullpen for the Chanticleers, throwing three scoreless innings, striking out five.

Auburn scored one run in the second, while Coastal Carolina scored three runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth.
Player of the game: Eric Snow
The choices were limited, but Snow made winning plays at the plate and in the field. He scored Auburn’s only run, made it on base twice, and made multiple nice defensive plays on hard-hit balls early in the game to turn singles into outs. Snow’s effort and energy early on helped put Auburn out front.
Hitters of the game: Ike Irish, Chase Fralick, Bristol Carter and Snow
Not much doing at the plate for the Tigers. Irish went 1-for-3 with two walks, while Carter finished 2-for-4. Fralick went 1-for-4 with the Tigers’ only RBI. Snow went 1-for-3 with one walk and one run scored.
On the flip side, Bub Terrell and McMurray — Auburn’s two and four hitters — went 1-for-9 with seven strikeouts combined in the loss.
Pitcher of the game: Andreas Alvarez
Alvarez played with fire at times, as Coastal Carolina had some hard-hit outs, but Alvarez did not surrender a single run in four innings of work. He allowed four hits and two walks, while striking out one. For the second straight weekend, Alvarez came up big for the Tigers. Last Sunday against N.C. State, Alvarez allowed no runs in five innings, giving up five hits and striking out six. That’s nine scoreless innings from Alvarez against the Wolfpack and Chanticleers. Impressive stuff.
