Carnell Williams took to Twitter on Tuesday morning to confirm Auburn Live’s initial reporting from Monday that he will remain at Auburn.

It was not clear what Williams’ position would be, but Williams himself has now cleared that up.

Auburn interim head coach Carnell Williams will be retained

Williams accepts Associate head coach job from Freeze

Williams announced he would take the role after being asked by Freeze. He added that the two shared the same vision.

It has always been my desire to remain at Auburn. Last night, I was able to meet with Coach (Hugh) Freeze where he shared his core values and vision for the football program and young men he will be coaching. He is a man of faith and we share many of the same values when it comes to coaching. I am excited about his vision and plan for getting Auburn back to its winning ways, including winning championships! Coach Freeze asked me to stay on and join his staff as Associate Head Coach. I accepted the position and am excited about working with him and learning from him. I ask that the Auburn family join me in supporting Coach Freeze and getting Auburn football back on the winning track! War Eagle!

Freeze confirmed the tweet from Williams during the opening statements of his introductory press conference. “I have to have Cadillac along my side to help me drive the culture of Auburn football,” Freeze said.

Williams as interim head coach

Bryan Harsin was fired as Auburn’s head coach and Williams took over as interim immediately. He led the Tigers to a 2-2 record beating Western Kentucky and Texas A&M. The two losses were to Mississippi State and Alabama, both on the road.

The Tigers averaged 395.5 total yards of offense in those four games, mostly from the running game.

More than anything, the Tigers had a resurgence of energy in the last four games. The stadium sold out in a game that was meaningless.

His contributions to the program were enough for Freeze to make him his first official hire at Auburn.
