For quite some time, Josh Sapp knew where he wanted to play football at the next level.

Sapp, a tight end out of Greenville (South Carolina), had been in touch with Clemson’s staff for a while. It was not until this past Thursday, however, that the program extended him an offer.

Just moments ago, Sapp revealed that he would be taking advantage of that offer and joining the Tigers’ 2022 class.

“I’m really excited to be joining Clemson,” Sapp told Clemson Sports. “I’ve just been working for it this whole year. I’m glad to be a Tiger.”

Following his offer, Sapp knew right away he would be a Tiger

Sapp told us on multiple occasions in recent weeks that Clemson’s pursuit of him was tied directly to fellow 2022 TE Oscar Delp. Delp committed to the Bulldogs over Clemson and others at around 7:00 p.m. ET last Wednesday, with the Tigers offering Sapp the next day at noon.

The three-star prospect relayed the good news to his whole family, including his dad, Patrick, who played for Clemson in the 1990s.

“It was exciting for me and my family,” Sapp said. “Called my mom and called my dad. I talked with my brother as well. It was just fantastic. I’m glad I got a call from Dabo himself. It was awesome.”

Making the call even more special was that Clemson’s head coach informed Sapp of the offer. Sapp, who camped at the school in June and visited in July as well, discussed Swinney’s message to him.

“Really, he was just telling me he’s keeping his word with what he told me,” Sapp said. “He’s just been loving the way I’ve been playing this year and he said he really enjoyed how I did at the camp. He’s been keeping his eyes on me. He said it was official.”

It became clear quickly that the Tigers were going to win out for Sapp’s services. The very next day after the offer, Sapp announced a decision date and put Clemson in his top three.

So, when exactly did Sapp know he was going to commit to the school?

“I’m not even going to lie. Probably the next day,” Sapp replied with a laugh. “It was just a dream come true for me. I’ve been working on it, my game. Clemson has always been a dream school of mine since I was younger. It just feels right at home. I can show my talents there and become the best player I can be. It’s the right place for me.”

Sharing his thoughts on some future teammates

Now a member of Clemson’s 2022 class, Sapp is joined by some of the top players in the nation. 11 of their 13 commits check in as four-star recruits, with over half of them being top-100 players.

One of those pledges is quarterback Cade Klubnik, who Sapp is looking forward to getting to work with in the near future.

“He’s a great quarterback,” Sapp said of Klubnik. “I’ve been watching some of his film. He makes the right decisions. He’s an athlete, he can run. I feel like we’ll have a lot of fun playing together.”

Sapp also brought up a couple of fellow South Carolina-based commits when talking about his future teammates.

“I know one receiver who is committed: Adam Randall. He’s going to be a dog when he gets to Clemson,” Sapp said. “I definitely want to compete with him some. Oh, also, Jeadyn Lukus. I know I’ll be going against him as well.”

Sapp is not worried about the Tigers, has a message for fan base

Although it’s been a talking point all season, Sapp noted that Clemson’s struggles in 2021 did not lower his interest level in the program whatsoever.

The Greenville High School pass catcher is actually optimistic about the future of the team moving forward.

“Clemson, we still have a heck of a lot of players,” Sapp said. “We don’t have a lot of the pieces we used to have. Overall, we’re still a good team. I just feel like we’re starting to get our offense going now and I think things are going to start looking better for us.”

Looking ahead to the future, Sapp is hoping to accomplish a lot during his three-to-five-year tenure at Clemson.

“Team goals? Definitely try to win as many championships as we can,” Sapp said. “Personal goals, I want to try to break some records at Clemson. Try to break as many records as I can in a season and all of that stuff at tight end.”

At the tail end of our conversation, we wanted to give Sapp a chance to speak directly to Tiger fans. He once again stated that the goal is to get Clemson back to the top of college football.

“Just know you guys have a dog coming,” Sapp said. “We’re going to be going to work and trying to win some championships for you all.”
