Clemson lands commitment from 2022 forward RJ Godfrey
Clemson has landed a commitment from its top remaining target in the class of 2022 as forward RJ Godfrey committed to the Tigers on Wednesday.
Godfrey chose Clemson over finalists Georgia, Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, Utah and Ole Miss. The North Gwinnett star joins Chauncey Wiggins and Chauncey Gibson in the class of 2022.
While Godfrey was down to six finalists, he told Clemson Sports that his decision really came down to a final two.
“I actually knew it was Clemson this morning when I woke up,” Godfrey said. “In my mind it was down to two between Ole Miss and Clemson. When I woke up I was like, ‘Man, I think I belong at Clemson.’”
Godfrey called his lead recruiter, Tigers assistant Antonio Reynolds Dean, about an hour before he went public with his choice. He said the staff was fired up to learn that Godfrey was ready to be a Tiger.
“I just called coach Dean about an hour ago. When I told him I was coming he just went crazy,” Godfrey said. “He called coach [Brad] Brownell. Coach Brownell was jumping up and down, so it was actually this morning that I knew I was coming to Clemson.”
Godfrey has been described to us as a skilled forward who handles the ball well, is a good passer and can knock down open shots. He is rated as the No. 184 player in the country, according to the On3 consensus rankings.
How would he describe his game?
“I’m a really elite defender. I can block shots at a high level. I can get to the basket really good. I love finishing through contact,” Godfrey said. “I’m going to bring the energy for the Clemson fans. I’ll get the crowd hype and make the big-time plays. I’m a pretty fun player to watch. I’m going to bring the energy and I can’t wait to be up there this summer.”
Godfrey knows Clemson freshman Ian Schieffelin well as the two played against each other in high school.
He is also friends with fellow commit Chauncey Wiggins, who is also from Georgia.
“I played Ian twice last year so we went at it last year. That’s my boy,” Godfrey said. “And also Chauncey Wiggins. I’ve known him since ninth grade, so we’re pretty close. I’m looking forward to getting to know him better when I get up there. I can’t wait to work.”
