Clemson softball picks up win in season opener

The Clemson softball team did not wait long to pick up where it left off. Valerie Cagle threw four shutout innings, striking out seven batters while going 3-for-4 at the plate as the Tigers cruised to an 11-0 victory over Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday night in Fort Myers, Fla.

Cagle had a single, double and home run in the win while driving in six runs. The ACC Player and Freshman of the Year is the headline for a team ranked at No. 14 entering the season. Expectations are lofty for a group that won the ACC regular-season title and nearly won the conference tourney in their second year of competition.

Sophomore McKenzie Clark finished 2-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBIs, while Cammy Pereira hit a solo shot in her first at-bat of the season.

Clemson returns to action Friday afternoon with a doubleheader against Kent State. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. ET. The main matchup for the Tigers, however, comes Saturday as they face No. 10 Texas.

Avieon Terrell talks visit to Clemson, where the Tigers stand with him

Clemson typically waits until a football prospect wraps up their sophomore year of high school before offering them.

That was not the case with Avieon Terrell.

The Tigers’ pursuit of Terrell began all the way back in April 2020, when he was still a freshman. This was over 13 months before other recruits in the 2023 class started getting the green light from Dabo Swinney’s staff.

Terrell has been a sought-after cornerback by Clemson for quite some time, but he’s been on campus just two times following that offer. His latest visit transpired on Jan. 29 for the program’s Elite Junior Day event.

Duke blows out Clemson as Tigers drop third straight

Clemson started this month entering a critical stretch of its season and hoping to get back in the NCAA Tournament picture. Ten days in, the Tigers’ postseason hopes are all but done.

Clemson suffered its third straight loss and dropped to 2-7 in its last nine games with an 82-64 defeat at the hands of No. 7 Duke on Thursday night at Littlejohn Coliseum. The Tigers hung around for a while before Duke went on a 17-6 run midway through the second half to turn a competitive game into a blowout.
