Defensive line coach David Turner not being retained by the Gators

According to Gators Online sources, defensive line coach David Turner is not being retained by the University of Florida. He is in the midst of his third season with the Gators.

New head coach Billy Napier has already met with each positional coach on staff and is choosing to head into a different direction; however, several of the coaches will still be coaching in the Gasparilla Bowl.

Earlier today, GO also confirmed the departures of quarterbacks coach Garrick McGee, safeties coach Wesley McGriff, cornerbacks coach Jules Montinar and tight ends coach Tim Brewster.

Turner has been coaching for 35 years, with nearly 20 of them taking place in the SEC. He has played a key role in manufacturing NFL-caliber talent as well. Those players include Myles Garrett, Fletcher Cox, Preston Smith, Zachary Carter, Pernell McPhee, Tedarrell Slaton and Jon Greenard,

During the 2020 season, the Gators finished with 35 sacks, which ranked seventh nationally and tied for the SEC lead. The Gators also led the SEC by 12 sacks in 2019 and finished with 49 on the season.

Additional notable stops on Turner’s resume include Mississippi State twice, Alabama, Kentucky, Minnesota, Virginia and N.C. State.

Prior to arriving at Florida, Turner spent one season at UTSA. He coached at Texas A&M for multiple seasons as well, overseeing the defensive tackles and taking on the role of defensive run game coordinator.

During his time in Starkville, the Bulldogs were responsible for 180 tackles for loss and 65 sacks. During the 2015 season, Mississippi State set the school record for tackles for loss, finishing with 98 on the season.
