The Florida Gators had a great showing last Saturday night in a 27-16 win over No. 22 LSU and on Monday three players were honored for their respective performances in the game.

Quarterback DJ Lagway was the SEC Freshman of the Week, junior linebacker Shemar James was the SEC Defensive Player of the Week and junior kicker Trey Smack was the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Let’s start with Lagway. He completed 13 of 26 passes for 226 yards and one touchdown. Lagway had a 135.7 passer rating in the game. Per a Gators release, Lagway “is the first Gators quarterback to win an SEC Freshman of the Week honor since Treon Harris did so on Nov. 10, 2014.”

Lagway is the second Gator to win this honor this season. Running back Jadan Baugh earned it following Florida’s win over Kentucky on Oct. 19. He scored five touchdowns in that game.

James had one of the best defensive performances by a Gator in recent memory. He posted career-highs in sacks (2), pass breakups (2) and tackles for loss (2), while adding a season-high 11 tackles. Behind James’ play, LSU averaged only 2.9 yards per rush as the Gators totaled 11 tackles for loss as a team.

Smack was — as usual — stellar. He made field goals of 55 yards (a new career long) and 49 yards and was good on all three PATs. He’s now 12 of 15 on fields goals this season and a perfect 34 of 34 on PATs.

Both field goals Saturday were crucial. His 49-yard kick gave Florida a 10-7 lead. In the third quarter, trailing 13-10, Smack made his 55-yarder to tie it up.
