It’s been a busy week for Billy Napier and the Florida Gators. On the field, the team held its first scrimmage of fall camp as they prepare for Utah and the 2022 season. Off the field, the Gators are taking no prisoners as they soar up the recruiting rankings.

A trio of commits this weekend vaulted Florida’s 2023 recruiting class into the top 10. Saturday, Florida landed four-star defensive linemen Will Norman and Kelby Collins, the Gators added another blue-chipper to their 2023 class on Sunday in defensive lineman Kamran James. Florida now has six defensive line and EDGE prospects ranked among the top-250 nationally in their class, the only program in this cycle to do so.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pounder is the No. 213 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 26 defensive lineman and the No. 44 player in Florida.

On3, however, is much higher on James than the other recruiting services. In the most recent On300 rankings, he was tabbed as the country’s No. 23 overall prospect, No. 3 defensive lineman, and the No. 5 player in the Sunshine State.

Gators aren’t done yet

Billy Napier made his plan clear at his opening press conference. He has a simple view of college football.

“We’re going to have a very specific plan in recruiting and evaluating and that will start with a major emphasis in this state. This is a talent-acquisition business. We’re going to work tirelessly in this area,” he said.

Acquiring talent, he is.

Currently, the Gators have 20 commitments in the 2023 recruiting class, with 15 of those commits holding a four-star ranking with On3.

A handful of key targets remain this cycle for the Gators, with none more important than Five-Star Plus+ cornerback Cormani McClain. The No. 3 overall prospect in this class, McClain is strongly considering Florida alongside Miami, Alabama, and Georgia.
