One of the Gators’ top targets in the NCAA Transfer Portal will finish his career in the SEC East.

Micah Mazzccua, who started 10 games at left guard for Baylor this past season, has officially committed to Florida. He is fresh off his official visit in Gainesville and recently took trips to Nebraska and Auburn as well.

After redshirting in 2020, Mazzccua appeared in nine games for the Bears in 2021 before starting 10 games this past season. He logged 780 snaps on the season and then entered the transfer portal on Dec. 18.

The Gators are on the hunt for several replacements along the offensive line, especially at guard, and landing Mazzccua provides the program with a day-one starter. This is a big win for the orange and blue, as Mazzccua still has two years of eligibility as well.

A former Under Armour All-American, Mazzccua earned additional offers from Michigan, Maryland, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and others from his time at St. Francis Academy in Baltimore.

According to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Mazzccua ranked as the No. 44 interior offensive lineman in the 2020 class. He was also tabbed as the 673rd-ranked prospect regardless of position.

What Gators fans need to know about the transfer portal

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. If a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.

The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including (of course) sport and name. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such as contact info, whether the player was on scholarship and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.

A player can ask that a “do not contact” tag be placed on the report. In those instances, the players don’t want to be contacted by schools unless they’ve initiated the communication.
