Florida fans already know what they have in DJ Lagway. Now, the rest of the SEC is on notice too.

In a new piece from On3’s Andy Staples ranking the top quarterbacks in the SEC ahead of the 2025 season, Lagway claimed the No. 1 spot. That’s no small praise considering the level of quarterback talent in the conference.

Lagway, a former 5-star prospect, showed flashes of greatness as a true freshman in 2024. He split time early with veteran Graham Mertz but eventually took the reins in the second half of the season. His breakout performances against LSU and Ole Miss turned heads across the country.

Staples pointed to that stretch specifically when making his case for Lagway being at the top.

“Lagway’s health is the biggest caveat here after an offseason spent resting nagging injuries, but he has the highest ceiling of any QB in the country when healthy,” Staples wrote on Monday. “If Florida has the Lagway who played against LSU and Ole Miss last year for an entire season, the Gators can beat anyone on their schedule.”

Lagway finished second in the nation in yards per attempt (10.0), trailing only Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart. That efficiency came despite limited first-team reps for much of the year. Now, he’s the unquestioned starter and the expectations are extremely high.

“Now Lagway is absolutely QB1,” Staples added. “And if he takes a leap, it could be stratospheric. But — and this feels like a huge but — he has to stay healthy.”

If Lagway can stay on the field and build on his strong finish to 2024, Florida’s offense has a chance to be among the most explosive in the country. And based on this latest story, the Gators may just have the best quarterback to lead them to the next level.
